I read the article in Popular Science about the 770 and made up my mind that I wanted a 770. I had a Pocket PC and it really sucked and this seemed to do what I wanted in a hand held device.

The problem is a checked out various thread about the 770 and and the WSOD and Nokia's turn around time on repairs and am wondering if newer 770's have this problem fixed or not.

I'm tired of buying products and they die a short time after use or are already dead in the box before you even use it. I paid top buck for a MP3 player that was not working as advertised and having already sent in the UPC code (could not send photo copy) and waited 2 months and then got a refurbished unit back instead.

I know this might be trivial to some but I'm not rich and don't want to spend money on a lame duck so to speak.

The n800 is nice but not for me the mylo ????

There are some quirks still in the N800 (in my experience.) However .. vs something like an MS Handheld that you know will not get any updates in two to three years, this is a much better deal and much more flexible in my opinion.
I have a Jornada720 that I loved except for the IE browser which was pretty much useless at shipping date. There is no hope of it being upgraded because the OS is on ROM and not patchable. I don't know for sure about the other Jornada handhelds but for the cost I expect better.
I have a concern that the Internal flash RAM on the N800 will eventual get write burnout, but I know that since it is Linux one should be able to mod the start address and run off the replaceable SD memory. There are new posts now on this site even that people now have boot from Internal Replaceable Flash working.
The issues the N800 has I'm sure will be fixed, even if Nokia doesn't fix them themselves. Thats the Nature of OpenSource provided there are enough users of the distro to keep the updates worth the time spent writing.

Apparently the screen problems with the 770 were traced and resolved and should no longer be a concern.

Given that the price difference between the 770 and N800 is $40, unless you are a) short of cash or b) mad keen on the 770 hard cover I would recommend you purchase the N800.

This is the short term roadmap for the N800 - significant software improvements are planned, which you will not see on the 770.

I have to agree with both previous posters, the n800 is a much nicer unit(minus the hard cover) considering the price difference. So fat, I have not seen anyone reporting a hard case of WSOD on n800 yet. It's not a guarantee, but it's a good sign.
Also, Mylo cost like $350, and it isn't as good as $400 Nokia N800 out of the box. There is a good chance that n800 will have youtube support at later time, but no guarantee on close source like Mylo or other Windows Mobile unit. Also, if you are hardcore, and like to try thing, flashing kernel and stuff, it's probably a good idea to buy a replacement warranty, not the extended warranty. Cuz, if something gone wrong, a swap at the local shop sure beat any waiting time of fixing the unit.

I'd recommend the 770 if your focus is mobility and easy use: The hard cover is a must if you want a device that you carry around in your pocket, and the hardware keys are much, much better on the 770 than they are on the N800. Also, the N800s stand tends to get in the way every now and then.

If your focus is speed, if you run application that consume a lot of memory or if you need SD-compatibility (because you want to read images from your digital cam, for example), go for the N800.

Unfortunately there's no model that has both. Yet.

Also, you can find almost new second hand 770 units for a very good price nowadays...

Not to mention CompUSA has them priced at $300 now. It's still a good device. I'd buy another in a heartbeat if my current one stopped working, but it would be after purchasing an N800 of course.
