Thanks for the direction guys, its really great help. Since i am basically a MS techie (and pretty good at it); what I am interested in is
1) what are the other options available for development in maemo?
2) Do we have a comparative analysis done somewhere with regards to pros & cons of each one of them
3) How big is the learning curve for each of these options?
4) What kind of tools support is available?

This will really help me and I hope other newbies to mameo in deciding which route to take.

Thanks again.

glad to see some enthusiastic new dev blood. Glad you found and posted the answers to your questions. I'd have given a clear answer if I knew, but I'm just an end user.

I do know that Nokia plans to push Qt as the official toolkit for Maemo 6, but GTK and others will still work as well. Basically, the same rules for Linux development still apply. Of course you know this better than me.

being a newbee to Linux and Maemo platform i am facing loads of issues with running the VPC image created by Nathan, but it seems I am not alone. Once i am done will share my experiences with larger community. Till that time will appreciate if somebody from the larger community can help me with the following queries
1) what are the other options available for development in maemo?
2) Do we have a comparative analysis done somewhere with regards to pros & cons of each one of them
3) How big is the learning curve for each of these options?
4) What kind of tools support is available?

Thanks in advance!

sure is quiet in here. Thought I'd bump this and see if someone would respond. I would if I knew the answers. They're usually lightning fast with answers. Maybe most of the devs have trial devices, out having too much fun with them...

Hey guys not a dev but looking to do some work on it so trawled through the available documentation and came up with the following answers.

1) Linux, or a vmware(or similar) image for windows. In previous projects I have worked on both are great. The only issue with the vmware one is that if you start running into problems no one else does because you are running from a vmware environment. Plus using Linux regularly definitely helps you with the Linux way of thinking when diagnosing issues.

2) Not as far as I know.

3) VMware up and running quickly, but you are reliant on people keeping it up to date and the inherent issues you hinted at. Installing Ubuntu is really easy but again you do have to learn to use Linux first which may make you feel like a buffoon (in Linux) where once you were a king (in Windows).

4) Looks pretty good. Have a look at the docs.

My 2 cent, install somewhere a distro of linux and use that for a while. Ubuntu is real easy and loads of QA's to google for. Then programming on it will feel easier and also you learn loads of Linux tricks for when you get the device.

Hopes this helps.
