hi guys,

sorry to bother with probably already discussed topic, but...

The thing is - e.g. palm pre and motorola droid are based on probably almost the same hardware as the n900 (omap 3430 platform), and they run on webos/android (meaning open source linux kernel + probably source of the rest of their platform too)...

Would it be possible to port maemo to these devices? I'm sure it'd be possible to port Mer - the question is what about closed-source components of Maemo? Are they even "fetchable"? And would it be even legal to use these components? I've again lost the list of closed components - does it also involve the GUI, or is it only stuff like device drivers and some telephony stack stuff..?

thanks for opinions

Andrej

But I think it will by cool to have Maemo5 on DROID (in Europe: MILESTONE) or similar device.

Remember even if they are using the same OMAP processors there are a host of other chips involved that might or might not be the same. (i.e. touch screen controllers, telephony chipset, bluetooth, GPS, etc...)

Check http://omappedia.org/wiki/Maemo_Getting_Started
It is almost working on beagleboard (no mouse pointer). It is just the SDK but most (all?) of the binary stuff is there.

EDIT: And there is also "Maemo5 on Beagleboard" thread in maemo-developers list.

But we have Maemo SDK (4 & 5) with target for x86? (With Nokia binary pakages for ARMEL and X86).

I don't have eee pc to try. From anoter hand ther is lot of drivers for this devices and with some kernel hacking we can put Maemo on netbooks like eee pc or acer one or MIDs.
