The N900 uses Ovi Maps (formerly Nokia Maps), and its implementation is no different from any other implementation of Nokia’s Mapping app. The N900 sports a compass and aGPS, though, and its power ensures that the mapping app is very fast.

It does not have a digital compass. The GPS can sense your orientation as soon as you start moving (how much you have to move, that I don't know -- on my Garmin is like 30cm while on my N810 you have to go straight for nearly two meters before it gets the orientation right).
