I realize it's push Email, but can you set it to continuously check for new emails similar to how I THINK blackberry's work? sometimes I need to know if I have emails right away and cant wait for the 5 minute refresh etc.

tap the top and choose 'send & receive' from the drop-down menu.

This will depend on your server, but the answer is yes, see the wiki page on N900 email options
