Hello,

I have found this thread:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...light=shoutbox

that died somehow.

I think that this would really practical to have here some kind of shoutbox/chat, could be even titled N900 shipping delayed

Any reasons why not to do that? It could take off some load from the Active Topics window

Personally I don't use shoutboxes on sites, but if people like them, and if it takes some of the trivial stuff away from normal forum threads, then it might be a nice idea.

I'm only saying this because I was a mod on a forum that had both the shoutbox, and the additional off and on-topic disucssion areas...

...moderating the shoutbox takes much more work from the side of volunteers. There very little control, and streams of conversations are harder for most users to keep along with.

The better solution is and would be for the entire board to be something akin to Google Wave; where you can have the "river of conversations" discussions, and the forks into the targeted conversations throughout. I'm not sure that such a thing is coming to Talk.Maemo, but in light of this suggestion for a shoutbox, would be a more senseable solution.

ONLY when it is optional and can be disabled in one's settings.

in my experience, shoutboxes tend to have even less useful information and even more useless flames than on certain threads... with the difference that it's there for everyone to see.

i'd much rather have an "ignore thread" function. i didn't post it as a suggestion yet because i still have hope it'll get better once people have the devices to occupy themselves with.

As a shoutbox addict on the nobox wagon, I vote "please god no!"

Ok, so the issues I can see here for SOME KIND of a shoutbox:

1. Optional - sounds good, should also help to render the site on the mobile devices

2. Moderation - is it really so much different than N900 shipping delayed thread?

I think that we could use some kind of chit-chat technology, to prevent threads with 1600+ replies about meaning of life and other important subjects.
We can leave it on forum, but shoutbox/wave/embedded irc seems simply more appropriate.

Well, the threads have some requirements to stay on topic, a shoutbox will ultimately be about... *clears throat*
