But seriously, why shouldn't you be able to change your avatar right from the beginning? That's what most people want to do first when they join new forums.
Yes, I agree. I've seen some forums that don't let you post links immediately, which can be useful to stop spammers, but what is the idea about not allowing a new user to set an avatar?

That's a question for Reggie. He's been running multiple technology discussion sites for a number of years. I can only guess he instituted the rule in reaction to an incident on one of those sites at some point in the past.

Fair enough, but as an experiment it might be worth a test of relaxing that rule. I've certainly seen several posts from new users wondering why they can't set an avatar, so it might be causing more problems (more "noise") on the forum than whatever the problem was that this was designed to fix.

I agree. There is enough noise on this forum already from device delays.

Good question, I had been wondering about this too.

It would be helpful if it said that in your profile so users were not left to speculate why they can't control those options

Is that an intentional design decision? Is that something that could be merged?

Not intentional as such, just how things developed over time. Search for "single sign on" for more info on a project to merge everything into one.
