Hi,

Being an N800/Maemo newbie, I have a few questions about installing apps on my N800...

I was able to install a few apps from the Maemo catalog (MaemoMapper is easy enough, etc.), but there are several errors that I get when I install others...

1. Some of the apps tell me they are not compatible with my current system. I have updated to the latest version, so I'm assuming this is referring to something else? (Is this a "not in root" error of some sort?)

2. Some apps tell me that they need other resources in able to work (i.e., certain software dependencies)... How do I go about installing those?

3. This is not an error, hbut just a question... If a "Click to install" button is not available for a certain app, how do I go about installing it? Update: I figured this one out -- I think.

Thanks for you patience and help... I know that these are probably simple issues.

Tim

I think I'm figuring out some of this stuff, but I still have some issues... Software dependencies (for the most part) are still evading my scope of knowledge... There were a few libs I was able to download, but almost everything I want to install tells me it needs this lib or that lib to install... Where can I find and install these things? (One app in general, GPE Calendar, asks for a bunch of them.)

Also, what do I do if the only downloadable file (Canola let's say) is a tarball? Do I download the file and then untar it on the N800? If so, is there a tar utility that I need to download?

I feel pretty dumb about asking all of this, but I can't seem to find any documentation that is clear about app installations if their not an ARMEL binary.

Thanks,
Tim

The easiest way to handle dependencies is to let the Application Manager do it for you. For example, you can try to install the GPE-Calendar .deb file manually, but as you noticed, it depends on a lot of other .deb files, so this quickly becomes a hassle.

Instead, you can add the kernel-concepts repository to the Application Manager:

Web address: http://downloads.kernelconcepts.de/maemo3
Distribution: bora
Components: free

Then, select gpe-calendar from the list of applications. The Application Manager will automatically install any needed dependencies.

Unfortunately, there is a large (and growing) number of repositories, so finding the right repository for a particular application is a hassle of its own. There is a wiki page with a list of repositories that may make this hassle a little easier:

Aha! Thank you so much... I was wondering how to find the URLs of the repositories.

Ok... Some thing are not working out for me:
  1. When I load most of the repositories' URLs, my Catalog File List can't update... I tried deleting one Catalog at a time and I got the same error until they were all gone.
  2. I am trying to install GPE Calendar from my Catalog (not manually) and I'm still getting the error about needing some libs.

Any other help would be appreciated!

Tim
