I set up my email on my new N800 exactly like my desktop computer but am getting "SMTP authentication failed. Check user name...." I checked and triple checked. I need to use SMTP (smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com to be specific) in order to send my mail. I set it all up but no go. Anything else I can check?

Hey Sam, I had this problem here in Finland. My ISP did not allow "relay forwarding" which means that I had to use their (my ISP's) SMTP server. You might want to check with your ISP to see about this.

Most ISP's will not allow sending(forwarding) mail through their SMTP servers without you actually using their network. It's an Anti-Spam device.

Setup a Gmail account, send your mail through them.
That should do it. There are tutorials on Gmail for setting up your pop3 accounts.

On the other hand, if the OP is using both the desktop computer and the N800 through the same internet connection (say, from a home network) then there's no reason why the N800 shouldn't be able to communicate as well as the desktop computer. We probably need more details.

Hi everybody. Thought I'd let you know I got it to work, [He hangs head in shame]. Not sure whether it was just bad "tapping" or what, but it works fine. Sending and receiving without problem. Is there a way to import contacts from Thunderbird on my XP machine?

Hey Sam,

Great. Unfortunately the only way to get your contacts on is to send them as vcards or type them all in manually. Export the vcards from your mail client into a vcard format. Make sure it is vcard version 1.1 (or something like that because the other version did not work for me, as I have a Mac) and then they will go over to the N800, and then they will automatically import.

OK, I'm back... I did indeed succeed with send/receiving email when I'm using my own network at home, but when I use other wi-fi networks, it rarely works. So, to explain: this regarding my domain e-mail - my site is hosted by Earthlink, the info they give:
WebMail server https://webmail.hosting.earthlink.net
POP server pop.MYSITE.com
SMTP server smtpauth.hosting.earthlink.net
Username mailbox@MYSITE.com

So I plugged in the bottom 3 in the usual places (ignoring the webmail server- is this useful?). I did no special SMTP settings. When I sent e-mail, I got a error message about "Recipient name not found" or something like that. Which implies that it somehow checked who I was sending the email to. I know the address was correct.

I really want the e-mail program to work, but so far, it's driving me crazy. Does anybody use it regularly? Why can't it work like www.mail2web.com? It figures it out with just a email address and password. Anybody have any other tricks to try?

for my outgoing email, I had to go to the Advanced settings for the account (from the last page of the account setup). Then I went to the Outgoing tab and selected Login for the SMTP authentication. I also set the outgoing email port to what my ISP suggests I use.
