One thing that is bothering me quite bit is the lack of auto-correction that seems to exist on every other modern mobile platform out there (BlackBerry, webOS, Android, iPhone). Typing out words that have contraction do not auto-correct, double space does not insert a period, typing the letter "i" doesn't automatically capitalize it, nor does using the spacebar fix/complete for you. To make matters worse, auto word completion makes you reach for the right arrow key to complete the word. I've filed a bug on bugzilla, if you feel the same about it, please vote for it.

i completely agree with you...esp annoying is reaching out to the right arrow key, that defeats the whole purpose.

Agreed. The n810 used to have auto word prompt as a bar in the lower part of the screen. IT was very easy to reach. The arrow keys are very hard to reach in the n900. I wish the word would complete if we touched the orange part of the prompt. It used to be like that in the n810 for the thumb keypad

Here's a thread about AutoText. And, better yet, here's a place that you can vote for it.

However, for some reason it's listed there as "invalid" -- I don't know what is meant by that, and I'm finding Brainstorm takes forever to load. Anyone else able to shed some light?

I think this is a great functionality for the N900 to have (heck, I wish Diablo had it!) and is worth fighting for. If you have doubts, read the above-mentioned thread, especially posts #1 and #14 by zkyevolved.

When you are typing and the device suggests the rest of the word how do you choose a different word from that selected?

I'll have to look into this. There has been a separate discussion about "invalid", and that needs to be picked up again...

Duplicate of bug https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6448

Hmm do you have permission to confirm it or something? (as I see it in NEW state)

That "bug" is stated in an awfully narrow fashion. For "autotext," one of the features would be that it is implemented device-wide, not just for SMS; that it can, for example, replace a several-character character string with a full paragraph, etc.

As stated in the bug, bug 6448 is not a duplicate. In fact, bug 6448 is a narrow use case of what auto-correction should do.

Bug 6448 is a subset of the larger problem.

Anyone using any type of other modern mobile device (blackberry, webos, iphone, android) would clearly see that this is a glaring omission.

i totally agree that the n900 needs an auto correction thing going on, similar to the iphone which means you dont look like a fool when u send a finished (with errors) text or email to someone.

especially necessary because of the keyboards hard use and the n900 is such a good device in other fields minus the battery life

this auto correction software should also have an option to be turned on or off.
