I simply cannot install hermes. It downloads from the Application Manager, gets aout half way through installing, then comes up "unable to install hermes".

I've tried downloading it from maemo select and installing it, but that doesnt work either. Am i missing something?

Any help would be appreciated.

The error

is interesting. What other programs did you install before Hermes? Did you reflash your device at some point before installing Hermes?

I haven't flashed it at all.

I originally enabled the repositories to get Haze, does leaving them on make a difference? They're disabled now, and I tried to install again, and got the same error.

the list of programs I have installed are:

Account-plugin-haze
adblock plus
bounce evolution
facebook widget + uploader
openTTD
personal dataplan monitor
qik
rdesktop-cli
rootsh
simple brightness applet
simple FMTX desktop widget
vncviewer
xournal

Yes. The package manager will always try to install (or update to) the latest version of a package that it can see; if you have -testing or -devel enabled and they have a higher version of something than plain extras does, you'll wind up trying to install that instead of the stable one.

The question at this point is what version of things have you got installed? Did you let the system do an update while -testing and -devel were enabled?

most likely I have unstable versions on, testing and devel have been enabled for a few days.

Account-plugin-haze: 0.3
adblock plus: 1maemo0-8
bounce evolution: 1.0.0
facebook widget + uploader: 1.0-4+0m5
openTTD 0.7.3-1maemo1
personal dataplan monitor 0.5-5
qik 0.0.42
rdesktop-cli 1.6.3-maemo3
rootsh 1.8
simple brightness applet 1.1-1maemo0
simple FMTX desktop widget 0.3.0
vncviewer 0.6.3-fremantle3
xournal 0.4.2.1-1fremantle21

If theres no easy way to fix this, what would be the best way to wipe the device clean?

To get it working you have to remove python2.5 and pymaemo-optify packages (just to be sure, they shouldn't be installed) and remove /opt/pymaemo/ directory

I used sudo apt-get remove for python2.5 and pymaemo, and deleted the folder. Not sure if it worked though. Tried to install again without any luck.
