We will add the possibility to customize the shortucts/functions of proximity sensor (and the camera button), first on a global basis, later per-application.
One of the options is to emulate an unused key, which can be then used by various applications. So one demon polling the sensor and switching the functions, based on the current application.

Next week, when the exams are over, we should have a combined proximity/camera shortcut handler, with basic options (dashboard and phone app). Then we will work on configuration and personalization.

Plain awesome, keep up the good work! Now these kind of things were the reason I wanted N900 and maemo - an open platform where a very specific problems can be solved through community. I love it.

A feature along these lines that I have thought would be useful, at least for me:

1) Switching between last open window (sort of like quick alt-tab on windows)

Making alt-tab seems to be problematic, we haven't found any way to switch between the windows/bring them to front. If anyone figures that out, let us know

It would be nice if you could provide a daemon to send dbus signals so you and other developers can go a 'standard' way to access the sensor.

Where do we get this application from? Does it have a GUI or do you need to use XTerminal?

I'm new to Linux so wouldn't know how to use Xterminal to do it.

@inzimam and @msa, at the moment the app is under construction, the code posted here was rather a POC. It's taking a while, but you know how it is, with Christmas and all.

@bongo, I have written a daemon that sends dbus signals on state change. It is optimized a bit, so it should be good enough to sit there as a standard daemon.

You can access it from

values are 'open' and 'closed'.
Polling is done every 10ms, footprint is acceptable.
I haven't found any smarter way than actual polling from the file, as inotify read() doesn't work with pseudo-file system.
There is a bug opened for handling of proximity sensor in Maemo.
