Names? I mean even the Facebook app on maemo-select isn't a full featured app.

We had talked about phones a few weeks earlier and I had mentioned the N900 as one that looked pretty interesting but a device I had not looked closer at.

So I've been exploring the content in the various repositories.
Installed and tried out applications
Read and other places about features, future, etc.

In the end, I can't help but to feel that the N900 and maemo are dinosaurs in many (but not all) areas compared to the iphone.

On my iPhone I download torrents at the command-line level (./gettorrent, etc)
switch between applications
Me too...on the N900,
using Kilkari or whatever the app is called, I play games like Dungeon Hunter, Alive4Ever, Civilization, etc with graphics and gameplay that the N900 is a million light years behind.
Got me there...I play games on my PS3.

I access the terminal on my iPhone and browse using a file manager.
Me too...on the N900,

I connect to my work mail exchange flawlessly and the phone is significantly better than the N900.
Me too...on the N900 (well, I use IMAP on my Zimbra server...works flawlessly)

I tether it to my laptop and connect the laptop to the internet using it.
I can even set up a MiFi using it.
Me too...on the N900 (streaming my HAVA to my N800 via the N900 right now as I type, actually via bluetooth DUN).

I also like music and there is an area where the iPhone once again wins.
Me too...on the N900. Not sure where you get "once again wins"...both play music. Unless you count superior iTunes integration as "win"..I view it as a lamentable crutch. To each his own, I suppose.

Seriously the 90% of the things I do off my laptop are vastly superior on the iPhone.
90%? Really? Must be that new math. By my count pretty much just games currently available and perhaps itunes integration (with a 3-year headstart to boot!).

The N900 is nice in that it gives more access to the OS and that the apps are free.
But, most apps looks like something developed 5 years ago and they seem to always be buggy.
Wow, short memory we have when we look back to the original iPhone launch I remember it took folks a couple of days just to *activate* their phone LOL.

I'm not a developer who needs full OS access on my phone and I doubt most people really do.
It's cool to be able to say that you got it...but if you need it to do your stuff then the GUI is seriously flawed.

The N900 is going up on eBay. Proceeds will go to my upcoming skiing trip (blessed by my dad).
It's a shitty device but in really good condition so if you want to make me an offer, and save me from selling it on ebay, send me a direct message. Offers made in this thread will not be considered.

If you're in the Chicago area you can do a local pick-up.
But thanks for the input..and enjoy your ski trip.

My I.P. address would be the one coming from my home internet connection.

They are two different devices for different purposes - period.

IPhone is developed to work easily by anyone - this is made possible by it being fairly expensive to buy initially, and by many pay for applications. Its perfect for my wife as an example, but also perfect for a mate of mine who is very technical but doesn't have time to use his techiness on his phone.

N900 is an open platform. We get to decide what we do with it. I just think thats such a great concept and I'd rather go that route than an IPhone or WM6.5 (fed up with limitations and bugs on Touch HD even with an xda-dev firmware).

I go with what ever is best for my needs. For example I hated Vista so got into linux for 3 years or so. Laptop fried and got a new computer with Windows 7 on it. It works so well and allows me to install all my windows games, so now linux is gone from my home computer. (Gonna want it back now for the N900 me thinks). But anyway I'm not going to a linux forum to moan about it. You have to use what works for you, if thats an IPhone then great go for it.

Accuweather was one that has made their intentions public. There were many others whose representatives I unfortunately did not speak with, but rest assured the Maemo employees did!

Anyway, to the OP: there's a buy/sell section here for this sort of appeal. You might want to request a moderator move your thread there.

Well being a Apple fanboy for over 15 years, i do personally feel the iPhone is **** and the contracts they hammer down on carriers is even worse. As you seem to love piracy so much im sure transmission on the N900 is way better than the iphone. Also firefox beats safari hands down! But give it 6months and you'll come crawling back.

Give the n900 a year and it will catch up to what your iphone can do today.
Maybe, but I need to use these things today and not a year from now.
Also, a year from now the iPhone will have ventured further then where it is today.

Augmented reality apps like Layar are really interesting. Will the N90x have that in 2013?

No, the N900 can certainly not do 'most of the stuff'. Not now and most likely never.
Jailbreaking is not 'risky' and if you want to un-break then just flash it.
Jailbreaking does not mean you load pirated apps onto it. You could - but you could also download music and pirated software on your laptop because you got internet connection. A lot of ignorance here.

But, Insead, can you browse with a file manager all your files that are on your iPhone? I'm not asking about the OS files but about data files: ebooks, music and video files, etc. That's what's always bugged me most about it.

If yes, how?
