Why does the N900 have both the power button and the lock switch (as the manual calls it)? If the lock switch it actually LOCKED (or "Secured") the device then I could understand--because the power button brings up a menu and is less direct. But it doesn't, it only turns off the screen. A double press of the power button does that, so it seems to only duplicate a function. For a device like this space is premium, so it seems like it should be essential for something if it's there. But I just don't see it. Help me out--what am I not considering.

Unlocking. The lock switch is an instant unlock, whereas unlocking via the power button requires swiping as well.

When the device is locked if you press the power button it will display the time, and provided you don't swipe, turn back off again. This is a neat feature, but yes, I'm also confused by the duplication.

I prefer to use Power button then swipe when I'm with friends showing off the phone lol
But other times I use the quick unlock/lock switch

Also by pressing the Power button, you can view the time and date, the phone is still lock and does not require you to lock it again (if you use lock switch to find out the time)

I like the current design.

The lock switch turns off display and disables the touchscreen... That's all.

If you want to "secure" the device with a lock code you still need to go through the power button and secure device or wait for the timeout.

I quite like the lock switch - I do wish they had included two more physical buttons though - one as a "home shortcut" to your default desktop (The G1 had this and it was quite useful) and another to put the phone into "phone mode" - currently if i'm holding the phone in portrait ready to make a call I have to navigate to the phone mode icon on a sideways screen - only nice to haves though, all in all I can't fault the n900.

I like it the way it is. The lock switch is in a convenient place. The power switch pops ups a menu and is in a more difficult position to hit accidentally (as it should be). It's good.

Heh, I didn't know about the power switch showing the time and date. I don't wear a watch and had been using my lock code to find out the time.

I don't understand... are you complaining because you have a choice?
