As I've been reading this and other N900 related forums I am yet to find a reference to a Nokia roadmap wrto new firmware releases and new apps in the making. This is the reason why forums like this one are full of guesses and uncertainty concerning the Maemo 5 platform.

Also, do we honestly believe that Nokia will wholeheartedly keep maintaining Maemo 5 when Maemo 6 is around the corner?

They stopped maintaining Maemo 4 when Maemo 5 was around the corner. So my belief is no.

They have a "when it's ready" policy. It is public knowledge there is a firmware (referred to as PR1.1) which will be released sooner rather than later (apparently the biggest hinted changes are Ovi store support and more extensive portrait mode for some applications). There will almost certainly have to be another firmware update around March-April next year which will provide the official Qt4.6 support (announced in October).

As for Maemo 6, that is one mighty big corner if it takes at least a year to get there.

"Maemo 5" is just the 5th release of Maemo... the core will be Linux for "Maemo 6", just as it is for 5.

What do you mean by "maintaining"?

Oh, can you post a link to the Apple iPhone OS roadmap please? The Android roadmap and the WinMo roadmap would be handy too. And maybe the Blackberry roadmap if you have it handy.

Thats a worrying statement.

i would hope that maemo 6 be built the same as maemo 5 so apps can be ported easily.

Also i would hope that maemo 6 is the capacitive touch screen only OS for the rumored N920. That way nokia serves 2 different cultures of qwerty keyboard and touch screen only.

It would also make people less likely to buy a phone and operating system that will be ditched after a year or so.

You can get some info here:

Basically the N900 is a technology enthusiast gadget that will be fully integrated into the Ovi market and Qt/web during a lifespan of 2 years (or more?). Looks to me there will be more Maemo5 devices coming before a "native" Maemo 6 device will ship in a couple of years.

At this point in time, I would says odds are that Maemo 5 apps won't be ported easily to Maemo 6.

Any mobile OS should support an on-screen keyboard IMHO.

I think we at the point now where many people are acting with the suspicision that Maemo 5 won't be maintained after Maemo 6 is released.

That Maemo 5 doesn't support an on-screen keyboard is a disadvantage IMHO; hopefully this isn't the case with Maemo 6 as well.

Maemo 5 applications written in Qt will be easily ported to Maemo 6 (and very likely vice-versa, as long as they don't rely on new platform features). Please cite your reasons why you claim otherwise.

Maemo 5 DOES feature a soft (on-screen) keyboard. You must not own an N900.

History suggests that Nokia will drop support for Maemo 5 when it moves on to 6. That will be at least a year from now, but all of our crystal balls are a bit fuzzy.

The N900 has an onscreen keyboard. I think Maemo 6 (incl. a Maemo 6 device) is further off into the future than people think. I think Nokia will focus on Symbian^4 first, then Maemo 6 as far as devices go. I think we will see more Maemo 5 devices before we see Maemo 6. These devices will be variations around the N900. Maybe one with larger screen, and maybe a smaller one? who knows.
