I'm very new to linux, no experience at all. I'm trying to ultimately install logmein on my n900, by using the n800 .deb files:

while reading on the forums, on how to install .deb files, if I understand correctly, i need to enable rootsh.

Once I go into x-terminal and type sudo root; it asks me for a password. Neither "maemo" or "rootme" work.

help !

"root" on its own will do the job.

rootsh allows you go gain root by using "gainroot"

sudo gainroot

The other is the plugin you're hoping to use probably won't work on Maemo5/N900.. The browser in Maemo5 is much muuuch newer than the browser on the N800/N810 which used the previous release of Maemo..

Installing it might cause problems..

If you want to install the ".deb" file from the site, I thought you could open it with the application manager (if you download with the browser, you should just be able to select open?!) though this might require red-pill mode.. again, if these things are beyond your ability you may find yourself in over your head already!! For someone new to linux I'm afraid this is jumping in at the deep end!! :-o

sudo runs a command as root (think run as under windows) gainroot is the command that will give you a "root shell" effectively logging you in as root.. hence "sudo gainroot"

Also.. don't try and install a package that mentions i386 or i686.. these packages are designed for desktop machines running linux, not ARM based Maemo devices..

I've tried red pill mode, no joy there too.... i think my phone is locked to damnation

Just had a look.. which .deb file are you trying to install..?

logmein-client_1.0.387-1_i386.deb

That file absolutely won't work on the N900..

When I looked at the N800/N810 link it told me my device wasn't supported.. and it is probably right! Email them ask them to update their support

Even using red-pill mode the phone might refuse to install the package because it is not suitable

I'll try install another .deb file so i know I red pill works. Any .deb files u guys can reccomend?

Thing is. packages have dependencies.. if you install a .deb file manually that doesn't mean the dependencies will be handled.. when you use the app manager and select a package from the list, it will automatically install the dependencies for you..

It is all very nested..

This package probably only relies on packages that are ALREADY on your N900.. so installing it manually shouldn't have any dependency failures.. But in all honesty, it's easier to select it from the list

eyes widget - already have that but thanks for the advice... i'll just be patient for the apps and ovi store... but the waiting is killing me. i really need to remote my laptop from n900 and vice versa...

iv been trying to find the full function list with no use at all and trying to run programs through sudo but with total failure could any body just lead me to the way and to a programing language to begin learning to write a script that controls a robot remotely
