Good afternoon everyone,

after spending sometime with my due diligence (search button) i have not seen anyone ask about a newsgroup client in the N900 section of the boards, im not 100% sure if this should be posted in the Maemo 5 section or here and will not spam the forum trying to find out. however i will be getting a N900 next week (shipped but with all this snow on the midatlantic who knows really) and wanted to use it as a netbook replacement, does anyone know if theres a newsgroup reader such as "SABnzbd", or when one would be available, would other *nix newsgroup clients work with maemo5? has anyone tried to port one. any help would be appreciated, i cannot test till i get the device but im greatly interested in a NGClient as opposed to bittorrent.

thanks everyone.

I'd like to see hellanzb on Maemo. It's a python cli usenet client, so I'm guessing it shouldn't be too hard to get going?

Lottanzb is a great gui for hellanzb, which can manage the queue for either a local or remote hellanzb instance. Would be fantastic to see this hildonised.

Most of hellanzb's prerequisites (python-twisted, unrar etc) appear to be available in extras-devel, but I have an issue with apt in the SDK so I couldn't get them. par2cmdline compiles fine after applying the gcc patch so it's just a case of optifying and packaging I'd imagine.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away (namely OS2006, the OS for the 770) there was a version of the "pan" newsreader available for Maemo through the maemo-hackers repository. It looks like they never updated it for Bora or Diablo and they seem to have stopping working on anything Maemo related, so nothing available for Fremantle/Maemo 5.

Maybe somebody can look at their code and see if it can be cleaned up for later versions of Maemo.

Note this is not the same thing as maemo-pan, which is something related to bluetooth and is available in the extras repository.

hellanzb works fine on the SDK.
All prerequisites (python-twisted, unrar and pynotify if you enable the above notifications in the config) apart from par2cmdline are available in extras-devel and take up 25MB+ on root.
par2cmdline isn't in the repositories as far as I can tell, but the source can be downloaded from here and requires patching using this before it will compile.

Hopefully someone in the know will come along and package it.

Hi, ive finally managed to get hellanzb and the lottanzb gui insatlled onto the n900 using the terminal. My question now is how to i start the program? do i have to run it through the terminal (if so how?) or is there a way to get an icon in the apps list?
