Hi guys,

I bought N900 today and I think I might have a problem here. After I bought the phone I noticed sticker on the box that said something like 'Navigation is not supported for your country'. I was totally amazed with the box content when I was buying the phone so I wasn't paying attention on box labels. I followed guidlines from this thread http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=36939&page=2 and I downloaded maps for my country (Serbia). When I try to load map aplication I get msg 'Position not available' and that indicatior 'the gps function is inactive' appears on my screen. My setings/connectivity/location is set to:
gps - enable
gps device - internal gps
Network positioning -enable
Location server - supl.nokia.com

I don't have internet connection on my N900, and as you can see I am complete newb when it comes to gps... Am I missing here something, do I need to do some extra settings or my gps is somehow disabled...

One more thing... There is one more sign on the box... It say 'FM transmiter is on board but it doesnt work in your country'... When I go to settings/connectivity/fm transmitter it say 'fm transmitter disabled' and i don't have option to enable it... This thing doesn't bother me much because I wasn't planning using it anyway but I am just courious... Is there any other setting that can enable it...

Did anyone had simmilar gps problems? I would appreciate any tip/info...

Thanks

How certain are you that you did not get the Chinese version of the N900?

Uhm... I can't be 100% sure... I bought it in 'real' store and got warranty from authorised Nokia dealer... Also I payed a lot of money for it (but I know that this doesn't mean anything)... Phone is made in Korea, it has IMEI number, there are hologram stickers on the box and on the battery... Everything else i checked worked fine... Phone doesnt look cheap, if it is Chinese version they really put a lot of effort into making it...

Check the link by clicking on "N900" in my previous post and compare the features. Did you purchase yours from a nokia store or just an authorized nokia dealer? Be aware that the cheap ,N900 also has "Nokia N900" written on it.

I checked that link and my phone doesn't look like the phone on that page. For start, my phone slides 'sideways' like real N900 should and not up-down like phone on that picture. Second, that phone has 0.3MP camera, mine camera is better than that. Also, that phone supports 2 sim cards and mine supports only one. There are probably more differences but these 3 i mentioned are moste obvious. As far as I know we don't have official Nokia store here in Serbia. I bought the phone from authorized dealer who was listed on Nokia web site. I also checked my IMEI number ot this website http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=imeinr and it turned out that my IMEI should be real Nokia number for N900 phone.
I am planning to contact seller tomorrow and see if they can help me. Anyway, thanks four your time guys (especially yours x61), if you have any more ideas I'd be happy to hear them.

I am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue or if it is by design, but I hear that the N900 cannot aquire a position from the GPS without an internet connection. I may be wrong though.

I just read this thread https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5337 . It seems that a lot of people who do not use internet connection on their N900 have same/simmilar problem as me. This does not look good

N900 can acquire a position from the GPS without an internet connection...after the following tweaks:

change the location server to google.com, info here, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=435977 thread #69

And leave the device alone, it will eventually acquire a position from 3 min to an hour, running eCoach may speed up a bit., Internet connection helps but not a requirement, see enclosed pics here.
