I would think a good way at this would be to port lirc to the N900, allowing the widely available configuration files to be used, or created on any other lirc host and transferred to the N900.

What about the light sensor of the device? What sampling interval could that offer if queried as "directly" as posssible?

You shouldn't need to do anything to make this work, the module should already be present (modprobe -l | awk /lirc/ ...if you see lirc_rx51.ko you're good)

I don't think the N900 got an IR receiver you can use, but look it up on the internet there should be instructions on how to build an IR transceiver you can plug on the mic and speakers plug of a PC soundcard (or you could even use somthing like a tape recorder or MP3 player with recording functions and transform that into an universal remote), it should be just a matter of adaptng the cabling for the N900 headset plug.

So what if QTirreco and Irreco doesn't have the TV we have on there? How are we suppose to add a new tv on there cause I wanna use my N900 to do everything!

n900 isn't the only device which runs irreco.

or make/buy an IR to audio transducer and fit it on your N900 and follow the procedures (don't ask me what the procedures are, ask Google)

I have QTirreco installed on my n900 and everything works fine with my Topfield satellite receiver and most of my Panasonic TV except one thing. The power button works when I turn the TV off but I am unable to turn the TV back on from standby with QTirreco.
I have a SKY remote which can operate the TV fine including the power, why does QTirreco struggle with turning the TV on? This is a TV where you have to hold the power button for several seconds before it powers on, I hold the power button within QTirreco, the red light on my TV flickers but that's it.
