I could literally ask questions about every single part of your post...but the main one i'll ask is what is the 'man' command?

If You don't have any idea what were talking about You propably won't be needing any of these tools/apps...

That's one of the reasons Nokia/the Maemo gang didn't include lots of the things a standard desktop Linux has IMHO..

The other might be as You mention; The rootfs placed on a 256MB chip...

Thanks very much for taking the time to answer. I must confess, I've been trying to sponge up as much Maemo/Linux info as possible in the last few days, and quite often I have found myself somewhat confused by the entries on Wiki/Google!

Thanks again

Yes, the N900 is geeky enough, but it is painfully restricted in its root partition, so it is missing a lot of less-used utilities by default. Most can be downloaded from the repos, and even the crippled busybox shell can be replaced with a full bash shell. Anything you still find missing? Help out by compiling it and adding it to our community repo!

You can also install my easy-deb-chroot to access a full Debian system. With access to full Debian, I do my devlopment on-device, even using git to commit changes and then push them to the remote git repo...

No problem...

That's one of the benefits of this community... We've all been there... I've been using Linux over 10 years, but am new to Maemo, but because it's built on Linux/OpenSource I feel very much at home...

I'm guessing You will too...

Lets hope so! At the moment I'm lost in a sea of information! Im sure eventually it will click. Cant help but feel that installing Ubuntu on a partition on my hard drive may be a good idea, not exactly maemo, but may help with the learning!
