I hope someone will take this a few steps forwards so we can one day find key words like "samba" in extras-testing. Hopefully without the words "this firmware version".
Actually it is not really tinker until it works, anymore. Problem was the assumption was that n900 used standard startup. But the n900 uses a newer startup system.

But yes, I am going to try and package it up to make it much simpler and see if I can get wizard mounter to work on it.

Nathan.

Just found another good way to show this in the default browser window.

Make a directory in /media and mount it there, it shows up as another storage system in the main view like so (mind you i did this with sshfs but the principle is the same):

Name: Screenshot-20100105-171921.jpg
Views: 1031
Size: 17.7 KB

/edit: also noticed this seems to relieve the problem with tracker going nuts and not indexing new (or any) media when mounting under MyDocs

Nathan,

Can you make a binary package of the cifs modules, with the necessary init script changes as a postinst script?

I'll gladly add this to my repository.

I've also noticed that it is easier to do, "modprobe cifs" on the n900 than "insmod". If the module is in an expected module directory, you don't even need a path.

Awesome thread guys..It's all going over the top of my head at present but I'm sure with patience, I'll see something turn up in Maemo extras that simply adds the ability to add the mount through the file browser or something like Petrovich which just adds functionality to the n900 via a a nice little GUI. Till then, keep up the good work and let me know if you need an average Joe to contribute.

for those who get permissions problems when attempting to mount (even if root):

chmod 777 the files that you dropped into /sbin

dunno if 777 is the correct mask, or if it's just the way I gunzip'd the files but it worked for me and I was having the same problem.
