I guess you're looking for a phone that will dictate you what to do where
to go and when to do it lol

N900 is not made for spoiled brats like you. Go get the nexus one and
maybe it will make your life a lil easier. wahhh wahhh!

Oh come on. (warning, rant/vent)

I tried to keep a positive look on things, thinking it lacks keyboard, no transmitter, no this no that. For me, it's Maemo because I like having what basically is a desktop OS on my phone. And given the chance, it's be N900 again.

But really, 3D UI? Really? It's nice giving people hope that some day they could run OpenWhatever from a volunteer, and quite another to actually think one gets whatever one sees.

I've had a Nokia all my life, back when the 8110 "banana" was the peak of human ingenuity (FYI, 1996). Since then, Nokia has done nothing better than to launch a phone, then ignore it. While raking in my (thousands by now) cash.

None of my phones ever saw more than one flash upgrade, to fix gaping holes. By then those people were already working on the next phone that had THAT, but lacked THIS, making me wish I could just smash two together.

By the time the cycle ends and the next nice phone comes out, years passed and nothing was fixed back. My N80 still has a blinking cursor on screen when making a call. It still has the blasted search contacts bug in which people named with initials are never found in searches again. It's been there in 7650 and it's there in N95.

I'd like to see your expression when you see "data restore failed" on PC suite comes up and you have no contacts, messages or anniversaries.

I don't see these people writing stuff for me. If they ever do, it's to regain a head on the market and it'll be on the next hardware.

Dream on.

6 months after launch, it's "Wait for it"
12 months, "you need to give it time to grow"
24 months, phone gets listed as "legacy" development stopped. Maybe someone will tag it as "unless major bugs are found" to make you feel better because they decide what's major. Has YOUR previous phone received an update two years after? None of mine have.

In the mean time, I've learned to live with it and keep forking money over on the next flagship. But just for once, could they stick with one, like, for a while?

Just point to a device and say "we'll support this one, actively, with a team that actually comes to work in the morning, for the next 2 years". I'll buy that tomorrow.

My last hope is with the community, frankly, I've got real hope. Frankly, I'm thinking I'll be using third party everything someday. My bet is someone will put together a phone app before Nokia fixes it up real nice.

Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see what the next firmware will bring. Boy do I hope I'm wrong.

Even though Maemo has been around for longer, Android has made some serious strides with more internal and external devs on its project and is starting to get more right than wrong.
Ok so just for the sake of arguing..

What devices had 1.0??? I think the G1 had 1.1 and was upgraded to 1.5.

So, on actual devices we've had 1.1, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0. (I don't think 2.1 is on an actual device you can buy yet?).

Now, Those were all phones.

Maemo has OS2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 (with Diablo), that all ran on non phones.

Now, most people seem to think that OS2009/Fremantle 5/whatever entire UI is a *significant* improvement over 2008's UI. This is similar to the hype you're seeing for the Nexus 1's new UI for Android. Sure, it looks nice - they are doing something right, but why ignore what the N900 also did right on IT'S UI improvment??

Also in so doing, Fremantle had to change a bunch of the insides of the OS to make it practically new - and is the only one of all the previous OS's to be on a device that can make real phone calls, not VOIP. Android, because of it's dalvik-centric design was able to run SOME previous apps.. but there was hella problems from 1.5 to 1.6 IIRC due to Android limitations hard coded into the OS.

So listing out the OS cycles still doesn't change much... as Android has had little over 2 years of active development of phone devices, where Maemo's version just came out a few months ago. Lessons learned of somethings can of course be applied from 2005-2008.. but actual software and codebase cannot. It's a whole new take of Maemo.

Is it a good or bad thing Maemo decided to completely restructure? That all depends on if Maemo can catch up... by most accounts the UI, responsiveness, navigation/menu's are a huge improvement over OS2008 and prior - so they have moved in the right direction - But now they need very fast and rapid development of bug fixes for the new codebase. Since the phone has only been out a couple months tho.. I can't say they haven't done that yet. The phone came out in Oct? Nov? And people were crying they didn't have a new firmware by December? Seriously?

Also.. a lot of people are yelling at Nokia for lack of apps... Even google has a very minute set of core apps that are from "google".. Youtube, Browser, Market, Email, etc. All the other Apps are from third party developers - not Google.

You cannot compare third party apps between platforms... that is entirely dependent on the developers - not the parent company. Developers will go where there are users.. it's catch-22 world in that aspect. What you *can* compare is a stock OS', and if you want, apps released officially from the Parent.

I don't think the actual "stock" OS from what I've read is causing anybody any real problems.. most of people complaints are in the apps - Ovi Store, Map software, GPS, etc. Fremantle I think everyone is pretty happy with (unless I'm wrong?)

I don't see where it mentions whether 2.1 Android has flash built-into the browser.. does it? Does the Droid? Is it Flash 9.4 or higher?

The lack of an Ovi Store, bad map software, and bad GPS could be legitimate complaints - as these are shared from Android to Maemo. Market, Google Maps, and Navigation. However, Navigation just recently hit android.. before that the navigation software of the Android sucked too.

I hope nokia realizes its all about software these days.
Not like SonyEricsson that releases 1 software update and thats it.
I said two years ago that SonyEricsson is running TOTALLY the wrong direction. Today i say any time soon they will vanish...

My guess is that since Nokia is also finally moving from feature phone => software platform, we will be getting more updates. Time will tell.

I am also waiting with interest what kind of commercial apps we will be getting on such an open platform. I mean Windows comes with all kinds of crap but I think most people replace much of that with 3rd party functionality like VLC, photoshop, Open Office, Thunderbird, Firefox etc...

Hell, yeah seriously. I'm still dealing with some pretty annoying bugs that have been fixed, but are waiting for some massive firmware rollout. I'm just glad I'm not one of the people still waiting for the 3Sim fix--you know, the one that was coming by the end of 2009? Give me bug fixes more often. If you're using a repository system like this, then you don't have to wait for major features (portrait or whatever) to piggyback on.

Maybe the 3Sim users will get to make phone calls in step 5/5 (Maemo 6).

I think Nokia realizes that it needs decent app offerings to survive though. Hence their move towards QT across all platforms. Thus a developer could make an app on Symbian (using QT) that would also run on the N900, and the Maemo 6 device. Likewise an application developed using QT for Maemo could also be used on Symbian.

Honestly, if the next Maemo devices are going break compatibility again with Maemo 5, trashing most of the application development yet again they really haven't learned anything.

Not necessarily. It depends on the application. For example, GPS navigation. If you had no network signal your pretty much screwed if you want to navigate with it and you don't have the maps preloaded. Yet with the Maemo devices if you already pre-loaded the maps (e.g. MaemoMapper, you download the maps, or with Maps on the n800/n810 and Ovi Maps even without a network connection you can still use it to navigate.

Granted Ovi Maps is TERRIBLE at it.

It's a reference to the book that "Bladerunner" was based on.
