Yeah books are not a huge space concern, I also have a Sony PRS-505 eReader with a 8 gig SD card in it. I have hundreds of books/docs (many of which I'll likely never end up reading) on it without making much of a dent.

For a sense of scale, the King James Version of the Bible is about 5 Megabytes of plaintext.

So 8 gigs is enough space to store well over 1500 copies of the KJV Bible, thats *ALOT* of text.

*Imagines trying to read 1500 copies of the KJV...*

If you're having issues with any formats, you might want to look at calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) which does an excellent job of converting between the different formats.

This a great thread. Now I know I definitely do not need to purchase the kindle. The N900 can do all that for me. Anyway, I recently download a book and reading it with the fbreader but the only problem is the scrolling is very difficult to handdle. I want to scroll the page with the qwerty keyboard closed but the up/down arrows at the bottom are not activate to use. I am wondering if it matters the format the book is downloaded in because I had mine downloaded in mobpocket(.mobpoc) format. Picture is worth a thousand words.

I also noticed some of the books only shows the "table of contents" and not the entire book. Isx there a format the books must be downloaded in in order to effectively use the fbreader to is capabilities?

Brandon Sanderson (co-author of "The Gathering Storm", the latest in the Wheel of Time series) has released a full book and a couple of short stories for free.
  • Warbreaker
  • Defending Elysium
  • Hope of Elantris

Sadly I don't see Firstborn on his website which I know Tor put on their website at one point...

Thanks, this does it for me. Now, is there a way to resolve having only "table of contents" of books download? I assume the entire book gets downloaded when I download them but why is it that only "table of content" shows? Anyway to resolve this?

.epub is the best format to use, and FBreader supports it.

Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org, NOT .com) is the best source of free ebooks and they put out new ones daily.

Another good format to consider for FBreader is the zipped .htm format. That works well for me.

There is enough fun and enlightenment in Gutenberg.org to last anyone several lifetimes. If you want more, for fairly low prices there are audiobooks from Audible.com or Kindle books from Amazon. You can read Kindle books for free on a PC and you don't need a Kindle. Audible and Amazon books are DRMed, which is a religious issue for some. And neither work on the N900 so far.
