Normally you would do that (install .deb packages) by hand with dpkg.. but you need root to do it. Which is why I said you don't need Red Pill.

I may have to rethink my opinion of Red Pill. Everything I've read says you need to install rootsh to get root access. To me this is nonsense, and is no different than "jailbreaking" an iPhone. I had been under the impression the N900 "came" with root "out of the box".. this would imply no additional packages are needed to get root access.

So, if someone knows of a way to get root without the rootsh package - please, let me know. Until then.. I guess the Red Pill can't go.. in cases like this where the App Manager is what is broken, and is the only way to actually install a file by hand if you haven't already gotten the rootsh package.

A reflash would still work I think.. but seems totally unnecessary if the problem is what I think it is. Those 3 simple commands should work.. if only you had root >.>.

Will activate Red Pill and go into rootsh then. Probably in an hour or so, so stay tuned.

OK, I've done some monkeying around and it seems to have been useful. You might check out this thread for a step-by-step.

Yup.. that was exactly what I was having you do.. he was just being overly careful in making a backup first.

Those files are so unnecessary that it's not needed... but yeah. No harm in doing it.

have no idea...I just can't get nokia apps or nokia software repositories to update on my device and forzaHudd(up above) has the same problem.

Really annoying to say the least.

I think Forza is fixed Chico.

Were you having the exact same problem? Meaning that your Application log specifically shows the error relating to /var/lib/apt/lists? If so.. then you need to delete (or move) those files in accordance with either the steps at the link Forza showed, or mine a page or two back (you will need root).

If you are not seeing those errors in your Application Log.. we need to know exactly what error you are receiving.. or an output (if you have root) from the command:
Code:
apt-get update
