OK, I've done some monkeying around and it seems to have been useful. You might check out this thread for a step-by-step.

apt-get update
I may have to rethink my opinion of Red Pill. Everything I've read says you need to install rootsh to get root access. To me this is nonsense, and is no different than "jailbreaking" an iPhone. I had been under the impression the N900 "came" with root "out of the box".. this would imply no additional packages are needed to get root access.
So, if someone knows of a way to get root without the rootsh package - please, let me know. Until then.. I guess the Red Pill can't go.. in cases like this where the App Manager is what is broken, and is the only way to actually install a file by hand if you haven't already gotten the rootsh package.
A reflash would still work I think.. but seems totally unnecessary if the problem is what I think it is. Those 3 simple commands should work.. if only you had root >.>.
If I've helped you or you use any of my packages feel free to help me out.
