Were you having the exact same problem? Meaning that your Application log specifically shows the error relating to /var/lib/apt/lists? If so.. then you need to delete (or move) those files in accordance with either the steps at the link Forza showed, or mine a page or two back (you will need root).

If you are not seeing those errors in your Application Log.. we need to know exactly what error you are receiving.. or an output (if you have root) from the command:
Code:
apt-get update
I really don't understand this "root" stuff. what i'll do is get a print out of my log when it fails to update and post it here for ye.

Basically this is the problem I have:

When I go into app manage, I click on update. This takes about 5 mins to update but then I get the "some applications failed to refresh". So when i click in the application catalogues the maemo extras, extras testing and the extras devel repositories are all working fine, but the bottom two, namely "Nokia Applications and Nokia System Software updates" catalogues has the "failed to refresh" beside them with the (!) icon before it in red?

If i click either of these none working catalogues i get the catalogue details(which are filled in correctly) but at the bottom is some red text with "resolving host timed out: downloads.maemo.nokia.com"

here is the log after the repositories fail to update. The only one that does work is the extras

I may be wrong.. since I can't view a working device... but you have a "./" in there that I think is wrong..

I'm not entirely sure if thats your problem.. but I think in the settings there is a spot for a "/" that you have a "./" (I believe distribution?)

That dot *may* be causing the problem. Not sure.

I don't think that's the issue considering that's what my Nokia repos have (my second post I think in this thread just copied the text I have in my device).

Fair enough. It just caught my eye seeing the odd "." in there.

I would suspect DNS like most others in this thread, chico. But not too sure how to troubleshoot it for you beyond what others have tried.

Last two days such things happen. Nokia repositories become unaccessible, then they appear again.

Try this one:

Go to X-terminal and type the following command
ping downloads.maemo.nokia.com

It will give you a warning that you're not root, but if you happen to get an IP-address (e.g. 92.123.155.32), it is not a DNS problem. So the ping command will not work without root, so don't worry about that.

EDIT: This way you can check if the connection to the server even works.

Here's what I got........

PING downloads.aemo.nokia.com (92.122.126.23) : 56 data bytes
ping: prmission denied. (are you root?)

?

Ok. That data gives me an assumption that DNS works. That means that your network connection gets an IP address from the domain. One thing that seems to differ from the nokia repositories is that it uses https and maemo repositories use http. The difference there is that HTTPS-protocol uses a different TCP-port. How are you connected? WiFi or 3G?

Could you try and go to this address with your browser on your n900:
https://msp.f-secure.com/web-test/

The idea is to test whether you can go to a https-protocol website. When you go to the website, the browser should also popup a yellow text giving information about certificate authorization or something like that (in your own language). You should see a web page that informs you're on F-secure mobile anti-virus test page.
