I just tried it again and it works "fine". It's still not useful though unless you want to edit out a few seconds of you fumbling with your N900.
Open shutter
Start recording
Tap screen to go out of fullscreen mode
Bring up control panel and switch on flashlight
Return to full screen in video recorder
I came from an Xperia X1 which did have a problem with the led burning out if you used it as a flashlight for more than about a minute. When shooting video it could be on a long time and I do not fancy breaking my N900.
That said, I think on the N900 you can access the LEDs directly and you would think the driver would prevent it being left on for longer than intended. In the X1 it was a hack in the camera library to access the LED, as by default it only functioned as a flash.
