Same problem here (therefore digging out the old thread). I suspect that some mechanism of the gui isn't triggered correctly.
Has anyone come up with a different solution yet?

I'm runnig vpnc to connect to the university vpn when I'm at the Campus. At the whole campus is wifi in range. Always with the same SSID.
The connection with the vpnc client and vpnc- gui works perfektly. as I see there is an option in vpnc-gui to connect automatically with the vpn server when the mobile connects to a specific wifi.
I can't get it to work. I set up the autoconnect, but vpnc-gui doesn't connect automatically. so how does the autoconnect work?
I'm using the N900.
