Aploogies for yet another I want posting but with N800 locked in couriers depot only 14 miles away Monday should be fun.
Are there any geneology apps for the N800? the ability to download and display gedcom files and add text and possibility images would be great.
Or an I expecting the N800 to be more of a laptop??

Cheers

Don't know of any. I'd be interested in this too. Here's a few suggestions just to spark people's interest in porting!

Gramps - Gnome-based genealogy - Used this one, pretty good.
GeneaologyJ - Java-based - I know, Java doesn't work on the Nokias.
Ftree - Linux & X based, uses X-Forms for the GUI
Lifelines - command-line? based genealogy program - I think it's very similar to DOS PAF, but I haven't actually used it. There is a debian package for it, so it may just need compiling for ARM.

My guess is Lifelines would be easiest to port, followed perhaps by GRAMPS, but I'm still muddling through my first attempt at porting, so don't take my word for it.

There's also a link to a Linux Genealogy mailing list here.

Hmm Gramps does look interesting and would be a bonus on any platform.
Used to have an ARM based desktop that ran multimedia Family History prog around 10 years ago. ARM 3 IIRC....Closed OS unfortunately although plans afoot to make it open,,,

Cheers

It shouldn't be too difficult to get 'geneweb' running on the N800, although I haven't tried.
1) It's a standard Debian package, so apt-get source from debian will give you a good starting point, if you want to try building it.
2) It's web-based, so no GUI to Hildonize. It runs as a local server, so it should work by pointing Opera or Minimo at it (http://localhost:<port>).
3) It's a decent good-working program.

Thanks, I'd forgotten geneweb. There are also debian packages for GRAMPS (not arm-specific though, as far as I can see), and a a debian ARM package for lifelines.

Actually in this instance I was looking for something that was not web based.Intention being to use N800 on visits to relatives. family history record offices etc where they may be no net connection. Then merge with main prog at home.

That's OK, geneweb can be used offline - it acts as a web server on your device, and you access it through the browser, no net connection required. And then, when you get home, you can merge the files.

Lifelines compiled for me today in the SDK, and launched OK on my n800, but:
a). I don't have building a .deb package figured out yet. Still having trouble with my SDK setup.
b). You have to make the font incredibly tiny in your xterm window just to get the 80x24 display it expects. This would be better with a bluetooth keyboard, so the soft keyboard doesn't take up all your space.

So, if you want it, I can send you a zip file, but I don't think it's ready for prime time, nor especially easy to use.

I'm still looking at geneweb, it requires an Ocaml compiler, and I'm not sure if one is available for ARM - still looking.

The debian package for GRAMPS needs python 2.4 and gtk-python. I think there's a newer version that can deal with python 2.5, but again, still looking.

Ah, I forgot that geneweb is written in ocaml.. it's been quite a while since I looked at the actual code.
