Of course it's possible.

But my personal view is that there's already a large selection of jabber/XMPP providers out there and administration of it might be more trouble than worth.

Might be enough to un-ignore
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5163
for a start.

The only thing I could think of that would be really cool would be a one-account jabber server hosting community@maemo.org (or something like that) that people can add to their roster. This way I could decide for example if my current online status should be visible in the forum and/or in other parts of maemo.org...
Also, it would provide an easy solution to things like
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=36268
and
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=35518
if the user's client supports XEP-0080 (which isn't wide spread right now, but will be included in the next Ubuntu release AFAIK... we'll see a lot more of it then.)

Could enable XMPP geoloc on said server then there would be no excuse for the IM app to not support it

Somebody said the reason why they didn't include XEP-0080 was that Google doesn't support it. (I wonder if Ovi does, btw... probably not as the S60 Client for Ovi Chat has a proprietary way of sharing locations.)

Along the lines of Stskeeps.

With all the XMPP providers out there having an own server makes little sense. The server resources are better used for other things.

Ok, just a thought. I was thinking like benny1967 was thinking but we're probably the only ones.

EDIT: voted and commented on bug cited above. Everyone else please do likewise!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have an update!

What |Removed |Added
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Status|NEW |RESOLVED
Resolution| |FIXED

------- Comment #3 from reggie [email snip] 2010-01-13 18:47 GMT+3 -------
Done. Added Jabber as well as GTalk and OVI.

Old version was not compatible to the newer version of the forum software.
Thanks to benny1967 for bringing the bug back up, and to Reggie for responding so quickly after new votes were added.

It's a start!

So please: everyone go update your control panel details and add jabber, gmail and/or ovi handles. I just did mine for the last two; I need to revisit my jabber account before updating that just yet.

This has been brought up before, with little if any progress, but maybe it just needs to be kept current:

What I'm really looking for is a way to "peel off" chats with users I see online. In other words, either click on an active user name and have the option to launch a chat, or incorporate a new feature into a sidebar that allows the same thing.

One benefit would be to reduce posting here. For example, say you're having trouble (as fatalsaint recently did) in communicating your thoughts on a subject. Rather than running up page after page of posts, a side chat could be spawned that allows the debate to go offline as conversants refine their points. Then they can return to a thread once the impasse has been breached and craft a more productive thread here.

I wanted to do this today with a couple of online members but without the infrastructure on this site the logistics can be burdensome.

Just one example (another would be ad hoc meetings) but I really believe we've grown to the point where we need to look at such things...

EDIT: request submitted to merge this thread with http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=11789

This is now done. Jabber, Gtalk, and Ovi have been added to your Instant Messaging profile.
