Is there an easy way to disable some of the status icons on the N900?

What do you mean by status icon? The ones showing up when hitting the clock in the menubar? If yes, head over to extra-testing for a package called tweakr, it enables to to customise the statusbar accordingly. You will find the settings for it below the normal N900 Settings dialouge.

It's actually powatool that allows editing the status items, not tweakr, and I think that's still in extras-devel.
