So I'm following jayford's advice in post #8 but I get the prompt getting stuck with this message: "Suitable USB device not found, waiting"

I have pressed the 'u' key and see the nokia logo with the USB sign on the top right while doing this. I've tried different usb ports also.

I'm using windows vista 32bit...
I think that your battery is out of power. Try to charge your battery some other device, or got another piece of battery to flash.

Same problem here. Nokia Software updater stalled with 1 second remaining for over an hour. I unplugged the cable and the Software Updater crashed. I reconnected and started the updater, but there was no option to recover. Now the Nokia logo appears with no back lighting and it vibrates when pressing U while plugging in the cable, but there is no USB icon in the corner and it chain cycles through the Nokia logo every 45 seconds or so, vibrating each time. Flasher just waits no matter what USB port combinations I try..

I like I have a brick

Looping like that is usually a sign of a low battery. Try leaving it to charge or charging the battery externally.

For those who had the update stall out at 1sec forever and then got the faint nokia logo in an infinite loop: I was in the same situation this morning, then replaced the battery with a fully charged one and viola! I was able to hold down "u", get the usb logo, and use the maemo flasher to reflash the system (with PR1.1-USA) as detailed in various other threads. 5mins later my phone was up and running. I would highly recommend a 2nd battery and battery charger. They are fairly cheap (<$40) online. Not only did it rescue me in this situation, but with my heavy N900 usage, it's helpful to be able to do a mid-afternoon battery swap and immediately be back to full charge.

I suspect the root issue was that while waiting hours for the stalled update, it drained the battery far enough that it was no longer possible to initiate a flash. It appears that those who stalled at 1sec and then ignored the instructions to not remove the phone or power it down during the update fared better because the phone was able to restart while still having enough juice to complete a flash. YMMV.

Have you all tried reflashing? As I suggested in page 1?
