The state of Arkansas is 'AR-ken-saw'. But there's a town in the state of Kansas called 'ar-KAN-sas'.

Look, I know you're not trying to be ummm...unpleasant, but you complain about an uppity American attitude, with some justification I'll admit. But don't you think what you say makes you sound like you have a bit of an uppity attitude too? Works both ways. Or are you just whining about the world beyond your control?

This kinda stuff is another reason why I'll never see world peace in my lifetime. It's nationalism too closely related to racism and other ugly 'isms'.

Anyway, back on topic...the US press pays no attention to Nokia because - they don't advertise!

3) I can choose to sign a contract or pay as I go for services.

I can think of ways to make it benefit me more (like require all carriers to convert to CDMA because I have an EV-DO chip in my UMPC), but I can't think of much that the government should be doing.

P.S. One "open" issue did occur to me and that is market entry. It is true that there are a limited number of carriers who have purchased segments of the spectrum from the government. This was an open process. At the time I worked for MCI and we lost the bid for the first nationwide spectrum allocations to Sprint and AT&T. But once the spectrum was all allocated, the market became an oligarchy. I'm not sure what you could do to change this although I will point out that competition between companies in the oligarchy still exists and does elicit change (e.g. Verizon's recent cuts in the unlimited voice pricing to compete with T-Mobile).
Your edit gets closer to my core complaint.

And my issue is not solely with the FCC, but also with legislators as I said.

Here's some reading material on the subject:

This silly anti American propeganda is laughable. Nokia has no footprint in the US, so its niche device is certainly not going to get much coverage. Its not even available in the US. Apparently the Tmobile US deal fell through as well. Honestly who cares. Nokia is doing quite well world wide, and those of us here who do are informed do read reviews, usually from reviewers who are less concerned with region and more interested in the actual tech.

I really wish Google had won a piece of the 700MHz spectrum but I am encouraged with the net neutrality direction the FCC seems to be heading in.

In a way it's too bad that the telecom carriers weren't the ones to go belly up in the recession. The government could have bought them out and would then own the spectrum and the hardware on the ground. It could have been run like the Interstate Highway system.

Oh well. Hope for the best, expect the worst.

Try getting an European car/brand that is *known* to work and not those known for failing a *lot*.

Fiat and Alfa are just... well, Fiat and Alfa. Most of the people here(Barcelona) just know that those brands are usually problematic. BMW are better although still not known for their reliability (I'd say they're average although their rear traction and usually powerful engines make them interesting...) (not the same on motorbikes which are just *amazing*, I've had two 30 year old BMW that have no problems at all and I own a new one...)

Try Volkswagen, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi or even the Spanish Seat. They probably are more reliable than those you've mentioned

Anyway, my general perception about the cars in the US was that you use them just as a tool (I'm talking in general ) and not to *enjoy* them. Come on! Most of the people don't even know how to drive a manual! Here (in Spain at least), we usually enjoy our cars, not just use them. Don't know if I explain myself... do I?

No offense

It's propaganda just to offer one's negative opinion on a market?

Wow.

On the other hand, US legislators are hell bent to support the telcos' bastardized version of "net neutrality", so I'm not encouraged at all.

Nokia still has a chance - video on phone (well just Skype) and it is a hit in US.

But some marketing is needed.
