Hello

First, please excuse my poor english...
Also, I'm not sure it's the right place to post that, but anyway, if it's in the wrong place feel free to move it

I used to have a WinMobile smartphone (shame on me) and there was a pretty amazing and simple feature : phone number matching.

Who can say he/she never had a phone number written on a piece of paper without being able to find the person it's supposed to be attached to ?
When I was typing a number, the addressbook was looking for this number and displaying the matching contacts.
Nowadays, it seems that only WinMo is doing this. (blackberrys don't, Sony Ericsonns don't, Android don't, ...)

It would be pretty awesome if Maemo's addressbook was able to do it (even if it was some option to activate or deactivate in settings).

I was also wondering why there is a possibility to add nickname to a contact if there's no possibility to search using those nicknames.
(Meaning : would be great to also be able to search contact using nickname ^^)

Have a good day and thanks for reading/considering this post.

Hi peyo, welcome to Maemo.org. I didn' know about that phone number matching feature in WinMobile, it would be wonderful on our N900.
You have had great ideas, you should file some enhancements request in Bugzilla:
http://bugs.maemo.org
If you have problems in doing that, feel free to ask.

You can punch it in the phone, then use call/hangup quickly. In the last dialled, the number will have a name matched to it.

Also, live searching while dialing has been suggested and not everyone agreed - most people dial to avoid contacts and listing them to onlookers is less than fun. You can search for the thread if you wish to participate.

It already has one, there's a nickname field (add a field). It's included in searches. Also, it's picked up from other address books that have nicknames, like Google Contacts and IM when you start using those protocols.

Am I missing something? Is there stuff you want that the "Nickname" field doesn't provide?

If you want to search by nicknames, you will need to change the settings so that the contacts app displays names by nicknames.

Seriously, that was great with a nokia 3210, but in 2010?
What about something you can enable if you want to automatically look for matching number?

Not convinced, but everyone has his own opinions.

Nope, not working on my n900 neither on a friend's n900...
Did we missed some config/option?
And by searching by nicknames, I mean ordering by names and being able to match names AND nicknames...

Did you check the links I pasted? There are people there trying to get what you want, indexed search in contacts.

Secondly, I have no idea what you do with N900, but I am yet to type in a number. The only typing I do is adding to contacts, and by then I know they're not there. You type numbers? In 2010?

Yup, just hadn't received yet my bugzilla account infos :/
But don't worry, I'll keep looking there.
Thanks anyway

Yep, but as I explained in my first post in this thread, it sometimes happens, unfortunately, that I find numbers on post-it on my desk and it creeps me off not knowing whose number it is and if it's on my cellphone. Of course, I should write it down with its owner name but it happens to me I don't :/

I don't really type numbers, as you pointed out, but when I've to, I'd like to have owner's matching (so I can type even less or at least check whose number it is or if it's already in my phone).
Anyway, anytime I see a WinMo device, I can't help feeling they have this killer feature that nobody else have (except if you're running WinMo yourself which I won't anymore ^^).
