searching through the forum I found this post:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=941

seems the problem was there in older models of Nokia.

seems the only way to ssh into the n900 is this (taken from other thread):

Fortunately, it also seems that incoming activity on a live interface prevents it from going asleep (which sort of makes sense :-). So there is a very simple workaround to ensure comfortable ssh sessions without annoying pauses, under Windows or Unix :

- launch a console windows and type : ping -t xx.xx.xx.xx (IP of 770)
- "activate" the Nokia's WLAN if necessary by loading a web page or such
- verify that the ping commands are successful and stay that way
- launch ssh session. Mine has been running idle for more than an hour now, with no freezes

If that is the only solution, I rather tend to stay away from the upgrade to PR1.1 until PR1.2 or whatever. Or would I have to expect that I can upgrad to future new versions only after I upgrade now already?

They may be dependent on you having installed PR1.1, but there's nothing stopping you waiting until PR1.2 comes out, then installing PR1.1 immediately followed by PR1.2 though.

Wouldn't the package manager only offer the newest version? Also now, you can no longer upgrade vom 1.0 to 1.0.1 so easily, could you?

I believe the OTA (Over The Air - via app manager) upgrades have to be done incrementally, but you can always download the flasher and appropriate image and reflash your N900 directly to the version you want, no fussin'

The OTA upgrade is not destructive of personal data (although backups are wise), as far as I can tell, whereas I'm not so sure about reflashing.

Possibly a similar issue, yes. Oddly enough, my 770 (still running good old OS2006) does not exhibit this behaviour with the very same access point.

Regards,

Chris.

In the quoted thread I found the suggestion to keep the connection alive by connecting instead by
Code:
ssh -o ServerAliveInterval=4 user@192.168.0.100
(constant ping-ing seemed to drain the battery).

Could somebody who has already upgraded to PR1.1 check whether that's a practicable solution?

Not a solution for me, just tried it, but I'm having trouble connecting in the first place, 9 out of 10 times the connection times out before I can even login.

I have now upgraded to PR1.1, reluctantly because of the problems reported in this thread, and I'm now surprised to have no such problems. WiFi connectivity remains even after over 2 hours of idleness, and nothing seems to have deteriorated otherwise, as far as I can tell. My experience is based on a Netgear WGR614 at home, and more professional hardware (don't know exactly which) at work.

This probably doesn't help those who are encountering problems, but perhaps it's good to know for others who are scared away from an upgrade that the problems mentioned above are not completely general. I must say that I'm so far very happy with the new firmware.
