I even tried a different cable, but the device is still not recognized by the computer.

Any more ideas ?

I'm in the same situation ,with an N800,from more than 1 year, and no solutions yet.I'm sorry, but I don't think you can bring it back to life by your own, maybe in a Nokia Service Point, but it's a small chance.
Cheers

what taht I don't understand - it seems to be software problem (happened just after non-official OS flash) but it behaves like hardware problem (not even trying to power on), and also, the device was in R&D mode - how is it possible to destroy it so hard, using official tools (flasher) ?

It's strange that dmesg doesn't show anything. Maybe try a different distro. One with an older kernel. Now when that I think about it, last time I had difficulty flashing it was on a newer kernel. Sorry but that is all I can think of, and also trying to flash an older image, like OS2007.
