I'm using this now,
I think it is exactly the same thing as what we are accessing on the n900, but i find it much much faster to use this then transfer to the phone.

Whoever told you to do this really didn't do you a favour. Extras-devel is the place for software that hasn't been tested (is in development) and can easily really mess up your phone.
You will need to uninstall iplayer-dl and ruby, disable extras-devel and then reinstall them.
You also seem to be running commands multiple times in a random sequence, which is not necessary or desirable! You only need to do the "echo" command once, and it's not affected by uninstallation or reinstallation. I suggest you delete your /home/user/.profile and do the echo command again (as USER! - remember, if the symbol you see next to the command line is a "#" you are not user!). I told you how to do this in an earlier post.
A final word of advice - NEVER enable extras-devel ever again!
Cheers,
Jan

I enabled extra devel so I can download things like mplayer and mediabox media center... these things were not show in app manager before but are now. I really don't wish to remove extras devel.
You say I must uninstall iplayer-dl? I am not sure how to do that as it's not listed in app manager. I will look at your earlier posts but you gave me a lot of commands I hope
I know what command to use.
sudo gainroot
apt-get remove iplayer-dl
apt-get remove ruby
rm /home/user/.profile
exit

If you do not disable extras-devel I think your phone will stop working in the not too distant future. Save yourself some heartache!
If there's a specific piece of software that you have to have (that's worth the risk), enable extras-devel temporarily, install that one piece of software, and then disable it. Do not run apt-get, or install updates while extras-devel is enabled!
You can only uninstall iplayer-dl from the command line. Make sure the app manager is not running. The commands to use are:
Then:Code:sudo gainroot
Now you can also unistall Ruby with:Code:apt-get remove iplayer-dl
When you've finished doing any unistalling, I advise you do the following (for anyone else reading this is specific to Gohan).Code:apt-get remove ruby
Now we're finished with being root, so type:Code:rm /home/user/.profile
This should get you back to a starting point (as far as installig ipla-dl ges, you still might run into other troubles associated with your update when extras-devel was enabled). Go back to the first post as it has been changing, and follow the instructions. You should at least get iplayer-dl working.Code:exit
Cheers,
Jan

With extra devels disabled, mplayer and mediabox media center cannot receive updates... is this correct?
All is working again now, downloading QI as I write this. Thanks Jan.
If I enable extras devel again, just ignore the Ruby update? I know this interferes with iplayer. I know extras devel shows me programs in beta but this is fine, all I'm getting is a few media apps and utilities, I did this with the n810 for over a year and didn't run into any trouble.
BTW, my downloads are still timing out often, I am on wifi 10mb (Would cost a fortune via 3G)

I did fall over on the step where you change the download path (I put an extra 'a' in after one of the folder names), the download failed straight away to the extent I thought I was using the wrong URL.
One thing I think hasn't really been covered here, the URL is the one copied from the web browser on the page you'd normally view the video from online.
