@twaelti, AMEN to that!! a shooter will be awsome!

I dont like the idea that developers will be ready when maemo 6 comes out though! i want good apps on my n900 not on the n1000 with maemo 6...

How do you search old repo's of the M2, M3 and M4? are these compatible with maemo 5?

Troll as used in forums is actually the short version of trolling.

The OP may have thrown out this post as bait to catch others but one thing he is probably not: a smelly guy who lives under a bridge

I think someone else summed this up brilliantly when they said that the Iphone has over 10,000 apps but questioned what he was going to do with the 9,000 fart apps.

Remember ist not just quantity its quality and i think that other members have also proven that the 100+ apps we have so far is just the tip of the iceburg.

The issue at the moment from my understanding is that we need more members to help testing so that more apps can be placed in extras and thus open to the novice user.

The thing is, I bought this phone for me, not to impress my friends!

Weird.
From the Ubuntu 9.10 webpage :

How much software is available for Ubuntu?

About 1,000 pieces of software are installed by default, out of the basic fully supported software list of 1,300 packages. In addition to that, there are more than 16,000 packages which are available to you immediately, and more software is available from third parties. You can read about the complete Ubuntu software repository and its structure here.
16000 packages.
For the Ubuntu Desktop distribution.
Read again: PACKAGES not even Applications...

And iPhone has over 100.000 ?
In only three years?

How many fart-like apps are over there?

Don't you smell like PR in the 100.000 apps for iPhone?

Aniello

Oh, I keep forgetting the N900 is supposed to be for brainless people who only want to do stupid crap.

I was at a bar on Saturday night drinking some beers watching a band, and my work called me. It was almost 11 PM. We had some problems with some middleware that was affecting our stores.

I hung up, popped open the phone, vpn'd into work, ssh'd into a couple of my boxes, cleaned up some files, restarted an application, logged into it via the browser to make sure all was well, logged off, closed the phone, drank more beer.

That's what the N900 is for. As far as I'm concerned, they never have to make another app for it again.

This tells one story:
http://www.theappsmachine.com/iphone...the-app-store/

And personally I count only applications with source code, then there are possibilities that it is in Maemo N+1 too.

given that a lot of the apps on the iphone may be useless and redundant, i guess my primary concern is having maemo5 or my n900 becoming altogether outdated/lost on the next release.

while i'm sure i can sell it to my brother so it's not an issue on the financial front, i don't like the idea that nokia would do something like that.

i've finally gotten around to looking at videos for the nexus one and i'm happy to say that i'm not impressed... my n900 already does all those things anyway

but it does make me wonder about the competition nokia has though. there have already been videos about android on the n900, which i'm looking forward to in development, but what about the apps? I'm not looking for apps to impress my friends (after all, why would i need a facebook app or a google maps app when i can just bookmark them and have them on my desktop in glorious full browser format?) i'm looking for apps because i feel it would mean a bigger sales for the n900 on nokia's part.

the mass public have been fascinated with apps since the iphone's release, something that's carried on over to the android, and i feel like more development of apps would translate into bigger sales. In my mind, bigger sales = bigger support on nokia's part for the n900 and making it worthwhile for the developer community to contribute something much more significant for maemo.

as someone previously stated maemo 1-4 has had a lot of apps and whatnot, but with the new release of the n900, where are those apps heading? it seems like most prior owners of the n series have ditched their older models for the newest release, and since the past maemo apps are no longer compatible with the newer models, they're useless for the new model owners.

i know this may sound like trolling/griping, but it's more out of concern that nokia would run a business like this. the past success of smartphones like iphone and android has been dependent quite a bit on the developer community, and that means it's imperative that new firmware updates/apps are transferrable to older hw (ie maemo6 on n900). without it, i'm not sure the developers have an incentive to program quality software worth investing time and effort into.

But as we know, the n900 is the second to the last stop for the n series as nokia has said. perhaps the next release will result in the final culmination of the vision nokia has in mind.

Quality over quantity.

Are YOU going to use 100000 apps?
