You obviously know what you're doing with a camera! Care to enlighten the rest of us what those 'little tweaks' might be? I can get superbe pics in good lighting, but less so indoors.

Don't use auto ISO. When shooting nightshots or indoors, use ISO100 and increase exposure. Whenever possible, lean (the camera) on to something. Don't push the camera button, squeeze. Breathing techniques in the next chapter

As for the previous remarks... tools have advantages and disadvantages. The interfering backplate is a disadvantage. Learn to work around it (it's always easier to whineblog about a problem than solve it) or don't use the tool if it causes you grief. As easy as that.

man... i paid 599€ for this device... and a big factor was this 5MP cam... and now i only get good pictures if i take the backplate off?!

i'm not somebody who's easily complaining about something... i wouldn't complain if the device was 200€ cheaper... but this product is hidh-end... and it's just ridiculous that such a dumb design failure leaves a bitter taste on one of the most important functionalities of this phone...

What I'm saying is that you can remedy the thing with a black marker or conscious use of the flash. Is it an 'oops' in this class of a device ? Yep (an even bigger oops is the N97 lens scratch, but I digress). Can it be remedied trivially (i.e. black marker) ? Yep. Is this really worth fighting about ? Put pressure on Nokia where there is something you CAN'T fix, like opensourcing the closed components, etc, but loosing sleep over things like this... IMHO it's just a waste of efforts.

Attila maybe you dont get the point. I'm in the same opinion with b666m. i DON'T want to, in any way, make the blezel black.

It's not the bezel that is the main problem. It's the blue slider plastics, which is normally not visible when the slider is closed. That's why the haze is always so much more prominent on the RIGHT side of the image.

ok... you're right... the turquoise slider edge is mostly responsible for that haze... the chrome part hardly affects the picture.

For those who have already bought it yes, the fix is trivial and a DIY job is probably the best we can hope for. Hopefully Mugen Power are paying attention and won't repeat the mistake.

Yes it is worth fighting about - or at least, ensuring Nokia do something about it for one simple reason: those who haven't yet bought the N900 shouldn't need to fix anything - the fix should already be happening in the factory. Do you honestly think that a brand new £500 device that has to have strategic sections covered in felt marker before it will work as expected, is acceptable? The N900 has enough "issues" right now, and it doesn't need something as basic as this being added to the list which undermines one of it's biggest assets (the 5MP camera).

For Nokia to continue to pump out devices with an obviously defective/deficient/flawed design is irresponsible and will reflect badly (pardon the pun) on Nokia and may lead to the N900 gaining a reputation of having a poor camera (which to be honest, is absolutely true in terms of the out-of-the-box experience and will remain so for anyone who doesn't read this forum).

Going slightly OT, there is clearly a problem with Nokia design and/or QA of recent devices if this SNAFU and the N97 lens cover are anything to go by - I have to assume they were both thoroughly tested, but when such obvious flaws make it through to production you do have to wonder what the hell is going on.
