Sorry if this was already said but let me add few comments about the 600MHz is dangerous 'myth':

I'm not sure who said that (Igor?) and what was exactly said at that time but there are indeed reasons for saying something similar.

1. there may be thermal and power issues specific to N900 design, more heat and more power draw from battery may add up to reduced lifetime of various components. So even if the device does not crash and seem to work reliably it does not mean there is no harm done. If one of engineers discouraged from overclocking in relatively strong words it is a good hint to me that I should think twice before doing it.

2. TI OMAP3 datasheets have some specific numbers of hours the CPU is guaranteed to work for various so called Operating Points (voltage/clock combinations). Running CPU constantly at 600MHz is definitely documented to have reduced lifetime. All those numbers may be quite high to be beyond typical lifetime of the device but I can imagine overclocking over 600MHz can push this further down to lifetime which may matter to someone. Not sure about OMAP3430 but for OMAP35xx (virtually the same chip) search for sprs507 datasheet and check chapter Electrical Characteristics. Small quote:

To avoid significant device degradation for commercial temperature OMAP35 30/OMAP3525 devices (0 ° C
≤ T j
≤ 90 ° C), the device power-on hours (POH) must be limited to one of the following:
• 100K total POH when operating across all OPPs and keeping the time spent at OPP5-OPP6 to less
than 23K POH.
• 50K total POH when operating at OPP5 - OPP6.
• 44K total POH with no restrictions to the proportion of these POH at operating points OPP1 - OPP6.

As for how to do the overclocking - it needs to be done in linux kernel. Basically it is about extending current table of available operating points/frequencies which means figuring out various clock dividers, voltages etc. Not super easy but doable. If I wanted to do it I'd search for code which e.g. adds support for newer 720Mhz revisions of OMAP3 chip used in Beagleboard rev C4 etc.

EDIT: After writing this I noticed there is recent related maemo-developers thread with some comments from Igor.

I read someplace that the N900 could be locked to run constantly at 600 mhz, but that by doin this the prossesor will burn. It's not something i would like my N900 to do..

According to this data - If we lock the device at maximum voltage for 6 hours a day (does anyone really use it interactively for more time than that), we can expect the CPU to last for more than 10 years.

If we lock it at maximum voltage constantly, it should still work for more than 5 years. I wonder if the rest of the device was designed for more than 5 years of life.

I don't think so, my 770 and N800 already have broken WLAN.
770 doesn't find networks anymore (reflashing various firmwares didn't help), and N800 cannot do Ad-Hoc mode anymore.

Possibly. But when overclocking I would guess the lifetime may go down rapidly. If it is 44K vs 100K when highest OPPs are used more often, imagine what the number could be when going to 800Mhz or 1GHz.

I guess the same applies to Nexus One and other phones, too. Just that HTC/Google is more bold than Nokia, regarding phone lifetime.

Droid can be overclocked to 1.3 GHz.It is running same processor. So why not N900?

I'm all for. But it's kind of pointless on the road since the battery will last exactly one hour overclocked to 1ghz.

Do you think nokia will have higher capacity batteries I could replace the stock N900 battery with?

EDIT- HOLY CRAP that droid is running 1.3ghz! freakin insane. That could theoretically emulate PSP games
Doesn't the droid have the same hardware as the N900?
