Here;
http://wiki.maemo.org/Remote_desktop
I read that "SSH X11 forwarding allows you to run applications on a remote computer running an X11 server and have them displayed on a local X11 client"

Is it possible to run an application installed on my n900 and have it displayed on my PC running Linux?

Which user and which host should I use?

Thanks,
Elris

Hi Elris i have to admit i have no clue on the x11 etc, but there is the scratchbox etc that i have working on ubuntu.... - similar solution? - there is a post on the forums by venomrush that describes how to get it working through vmware and an image, but i'm sure it must just be possible through a linuxy solution?

i tried it once but from an ubuntu box, and it doesn't seem to be working (tried with old firmware though). the other way around (running pc apps via ssh x11 fwd) works great though

Does somebody know if it's not possible or if we just need some particulare application to make it working?

I think that the problem is that the N900 is missing the xauth package.

You can try with x11vnc (extras-testing IIRC)...

X forwarding via SSH needs the xauth package, yes. But a good old regular X connection works okay-ish.

On your desktop machine, get a terminal and disable access control by typing:

xhost +

On the N900, get a terminal and type

export DISPLAY=youripaddress:0

where youripaddress is the IP address of the desktop machine. Then have fun by seeing which N900 applications you can start on your desktop! Some have trouble because they go fullscreen and then assume that their window is 800x480 pixels. And I don't know why the funny palette on the Map application.

Still struggling to see any practical application of this!

thank you very much.

Well, I have my N900 memory full with all those files and folders I'm using for my job. And I also installed Easy Debian. When I'm travelling to different places where I can find Linux machines, I could easily use your method to connect to my N900 and work on a large screen. Startup time of OpenOffice, for instance, can be a bit slow, but than it works fine enough. So, I could keep applications and files just on N900 and run them on different machines.

Do you have an active firewall? Is your X server started with the flag that tells it to listen for connections over normal X protocol?

And, more importantly, HOW does it not work? What did you do? What did you expect?
