Nokia sells devices, that's where they get all the money from.

New OS means new device, N900 will never get a M6, that the only thing we can be sure, stop fooling yourself.

It seems that turn-by-turn will be indeed implemented but with Maemo 6 as milestone... the problem is not JUST waiting for a year while Nokia customers with old models got it on Ovi Maps 3 for free now, is that they doesn't even seem to care about N900 early adopters being unsatisfied after just about a month its release!!

Maybe Nokia marketing team thinks that Sygic will cover this deficiency, since N900 was already pretty cheap... if we got it then we can buy GPS SW as well... Nevertheless, Symbian mobile owners now probably won't buy GPS SW anymore, just us who bought N900.

Told ya, everything points in that direction. M5 probably won't get any major application improvements at all.

This is the last Nokia product I will ever buy. I'm not sure how long I will keep it, but i have never seen a product get virtually abandoned so fast after release.

And I don't buy the step 4 of 5 bullshait. No where on the n900's product page does it say anything like that. They are marketing the n900 as the new generation phone/internet tablet. I have no idea why people are protecting Nokia with that excuse.

I have the same feeling... Had been a Nokia customer for years and now that I trusted them to be an early adopter on N900 (leaving from N95 BTW) I see all this news about improvement for Symbian and some mention to Maemo 6, but no compromise with the just released N900.

Usually a company focus all its marketing on newly released devices, not the case of Nokia... If I had my N95 yet would have navigation for free just anyone else, or if I knew in advance this lack of post-sales support could happen would rethink what device to buy.

It's looking more and more that i'll be waiting for the maemo 6. Just hope I can get it unlocked with tmo3g

yes... my feelings exactly... never expected this.. of course i did my research, of course i knew about step 4 of 5.. and I’m quite happy with the N900. Nevertheless i was expecting more support from Nokia also when i read it had GPS i assumed there would be some turn by turn navigation software. Also, when I read it had a front camera I assumed it had videoconference (it has now with gtalk)…
I think this device history is becoming weird…

So sad. I think I'll just pick up a used 810 cause I want a KB. Lack of MaemoMapper is really a deal breaker for me and this OviMaps thing seems to be a joke. If someone has a video that I can look at that shows that OviMaps can do for me what MM does now I MAY reconsider a 900, but at this point I think I'll just use my 800 till it dies and maybe an 810.

Noone is protecting Nokia, we're telling you what the reality is and how believing anything else is nothing but wishful thinking.

1) If Nokia ment for us to have Maps 3 now, they would not have worked hard to complete Maps 1 basically just weeks before.

2) People seems to think that giving Maps 3 to Symbian owners should mean that Maemo owners should get it too, or it's liek omg nott fair. Fact is, they ALREADY had Maps 3 for Symbian. They changed strategy on how to make money from it.
Maemo is a completely different OS. They can't give Maps 3 for Maemo away, because they don't HAVE Maps 3 for Maemo, and they would have to spend developing resources on it before they could give it away, and they would have to do a full development process on it before they could give it away. Why in Spagettimonster's name would you expect them to do something that expensive without even marketing it for increased sales?

No, I don't defend Nokia, I am telling you the difference between dreams and reality, and your expectations are unfounded.

That said, I think it's crap that they didn't make a better version of Maps to start with, but I assure you, they would not make any version of anything on a brand new platform, just to have it replaced after a few weeks.

hi all, i'm new here but thought i would jump right in.

volt's post on ovimaps does make sense, as an admirer of the n900, only ovimaps is holding me back, or the lack of it.

since ovimaps 3.0 was never on the n900 to begin with, it doesn't look like a x3.0 will be developed. further, just because ovimaps 3.0 is free for other symbian nokia phones does not mean that buyers are getting this free upgrade. eldar from mobile-review did an extensive writeup on this, i believe the approach that nokia is taking now is to bundle in free navigation for the subsequent new phones that nokia sells.

this means that ovimaps cost will be a one time fee that nokia factors into cost of selling the phones. this could also mean that nokia can justify keeping prices somewhat higher over the lifespan of the device. this would make sense for lower cost devices (below n97 series) while also charging a small premium for their flagship devices. since the free ovimaps navigation applies to the symbian newer phones, it looks like nokia is banking largely still on this symbian os to push tha majority of smartphones. seeing as they have the lionshare of smartphones in the world, i sense that relying on a somewhat limited symbian os is the power of nokia's sales team doing their work to push volume of phones, rather than a r&d department pushing the limits of tech (maemo).

that being said, even without ovimaps navigation, the n900 is something i'm lusting over. i figure i can use google maps on the browser in a pinch. and yes, i still want VERY MUCH for ovimaps proper navigation, offline gps mind you, to appear for the n900. i'm going to wait as long as i can the next few weeks and hope and pray that nokia does not snub the buyers of it's most expensive, most advanced smartphone.
