And how convenient will it be when someone steals your phone and your "backup" was on your SIM card?

You could also Sync contacts between your N900 and an old Nokia phone. If you need to swap your SIM into a different phone regularly then contact Syncing is easy.

The SIM card doesn't have contacts. It has a very (VERY) basic list of phone numbers, with just name/number pairs. The name field is also quite short. Thus, you can import the phone list into a contacts database, but you can't export the contacts database into the phone list. Not without at least making a new entry for every number, so that a contact entry like

Code:
first middle lastname
home: 123555678
work: 555123555
mobile: 199555199199
email: someone@example.com
address: somewhere sometown
becomes
Code:
first lastname
123555678

first lastname
555123555

first lastname
199555199199
i.e. separate entries for each number, no metadata, shorter name, no mail address, no physical address, etc. Messy.

Yes. It is a real pity that Nokia never solved this problem. Maybe they can find a company that has been making phones with export capabilities for the last 15 years that will help them.

I have brought this up as a brainstorm. I would link to it, but I'm not sure how to do so.
