Now that the dust is setteling on new toy syndrom, thought I'd ask a few questions before I rush off and buy a N900 (they are finally in the shops here now!).
I have been using the N810 internet tablet for 18 months (and the N800 for a year before that) and I use it ALOT especially in the evenings, its a really great way to browse the web, chat via IRC/MSN etc.; I use the N95 as my phone, and I have tethered them so I can use either my home wifi or 3G when out and about. As a phone user, I'm not that heavy a user - much more time to be spent as a computer user.

The apps. I use most are :
Pidgin (never turn that off)
Browser (ditto - I run my music server via a browser)
rDesktop (why get out of my seat to check up on my PC)
Transmission (mans gotta torrent)
Mplayer (use it, but its not a great app)
Media Streamer (use it but only works with 20% of my media)

SO what are the things that bug me the most about the N810 and that I HOPE are fixed in the N900:

SLOW web browsing .. you get used to it, but it does bug me (hence why I'm writing this on my PC).
SLOW to usless FLASH (I have it turned it off all the time now - some web sites just kill it, i.e. BBC).
Media Streaming - I would love to stream media from my Server, but its always in the wrong format/codec, and life too short to re-code everything..
Media FLAC support, my entire music library is in FLAC, I'd like to stream it or play it without having to re-encode - used to work but lumpy, and now I can't get it to work at all.
Poor Audio .. the audio playback was pants.

So, how does the N900 cope with the above? The web browsing with Flash is a must - its the one thing that makes me want to ditch the N810; I'd love to be able to stream media without any re-encoding, and I'd like to be able to put on headphones and listen everynow and again.

Cheers

BT

I'm also more of a computer user and not a phone user. I have an N800, N810 and N900..

The browser is much faster on N900, but it has some firefox/gecko-typical slowdowns which makes for example browsing talk.maemo.org faster on N810 with Tear. I guess Tear is also available on N900, but microb isn't slow enough for me to try it.

BBC is still too slow if you look at other threads about iplayer. I don't live in UK so I don't have access to iplayer stuff..

Audio playback on N810 is poor IME, the noise floor is very high... That's much improved with N900, although with my Sennheiser cx-300 the volume is a bit too high.

By installing ogg-support from extras, flac files work in the default media player. People have criticized the media player for cumbersome playlist management and such..

The media player supports some upnp/dlna/whatever stuff. If you on computer set wmp to share media, it will play on N900 over wlan. Haven't tried it myself though..

On the iPlayer side, there is an iPlayer app that will let you download and watch iPlayer content offline -- and this may very well lead to a streaming mechanism at some point. In the mean time, some tips:

This has a long way to go before it's a proper app, but it's usable now

I'm sorry about not hitting most of the OP's original questions regarding the N810 to N900 transitions, but those weren't the issue I had when moving. My issues of FBReader and MaemoMapper being unavailable have been sorted, and my N810 sits pining for me. It will become a component of the audio system of the house at some point.

I do miss the physical screen size (the N810 was about perfect), and the usable kickstand.

To try and answer some of the questions - I used to have an n800 ages ago...
1) The browser is great, must faster overall and handles all sites pretty well!
2) Flash is acceptable, still not brilliant but you can stream BBC iPlayer music content perfectly and watch youtube without too much trouble.
3) No need for Pidgin here, with the built in conversations support for multiple IM providers using an additional plugin! To put it mildly IM and VOIP support is brilliant... Best experience on a phone/tablet yet as they are added in with your contacts and people are expanding the services continually - facebook chat is coming for example.

I dont use remote desktop or transmission but I believe there are n900 versions for both.

So far I have been very impressed with the n900, great device - there are some things that are lacking but these are being addressed at least by the community (ie MMS support)

Thanks for your input; got a dealer that will let me play with the N900 on Tuesday, so i guess i know what to expect.
When i saw the iPad i knew it wasn't for me - so i knew i was back looking at the N900.
