I had my N900 proto for a few months and never used a screen protector. I just used common sense with what pocket I was putting it in with... no keys or anything stupid like that. I only had two tiny scratches in the bezel, not even the screen itself.

I use a screen protector on my N900 because i don't have time to spend worrying about what else may be in my pocket or hand(s) when i'm using it. I have a cheap case on it for the same reason.
What i can't understand, though, is spending $40+ on the case and screen protector. If an insurance police becomes a significant fraction of the cost of the insured, it's rather pointless.
