This thread is full of tell tale signs of **** envy...

My ***** is so small... I need to compensate it by emulating X, which has a larger *****.....

***** = Library of apps.

All of this emulation... why?

I'm genuinely curious. Surprised nobody has done a one up and put VirtualBox on the N900 instead.

Honestly . . . all those million and one iPhone Apps are actually mindless pieces of garbage . . . . . thousands of fart machines and virtual flash-light apps . . . . a ton a rss readers to act as mobile versions of websites giving them the ability to be in the app store . . .

Honestly, I made a similar post like this related to integrating a Java/Android Layer into the Maemo Kernel to add the ablity of running android apps but after unboxing my N900 today I really do not see the need.

How many apps do you really need?

(The N900 already has quite a few if enable the maemo.org extras and I know their are a bunch more on the way)

Is it really worth slowing down your pure linux device just to say it can run iphone/droid apps?

Even better yet, is it worth spending time developing the ability to run these apps when you can spend time building MORE ROBUST, FULL FEATURED LINUX APPLICATIONS for the Maemo OS?

(Or spend a little bit of time porting some of the GREAT FULL FEATURED LINUX DESKTOP APPLICATIONS to the Maemo OS)

All and all their are plenty of great apps out for Maemo Already that can do almost everything you can do with an iPhone can do (except make fart noises) and a few apps that do things that the iphone can't do like make 3G skype calls.

iFeel that the Nokia N900 has an app for pretty much every practical purpose that you need in a Mobile Device . . .

My Question .....

What Apps do you miss from your old iPhone or Android Device that are not yet available for Maemo ???

I'd have to say... I doubt it. And if it did happen, it'll be slow. That's my main gripe with emulation.

It's hardly ever better than the original - DosBox excepted.

But as it stands, to swipe the entire iTunes Music Store as "garbage"... that's quite possibly the most stupid thing I've seen in ages. If you said "majority", no argument. If you said "some", no argument. But "all" - no.

Even I have 12 apps that do exist on the iPhone that do not exist on the N900 that I use regularly. I'll remain patient, wait for the actual development to catch up with the platform - it's a new platform and it took the iPhone some 2+ years to get apps I actually even liked and kept.

So far, DialCentral is about it on the N900 I couldn't live without. That's one... and counting.

It'll get there. But less time on emulation, more on improving the base OS - like the PIM features... or phone... or e-mail client.

I am actually quite surprised with all the hatred that this thread is generating... I thought of a simple question the other day of and I thought I would ask if it's possible or not.. I didn't even request it to be made or something... just was wondering if it's possible or not... Yes, there are alot of badd apps for the iPhone.. but some of them are quite useful... I am impressed ith one of them (the DirectTV app that I talked about earlier) and there a few of those.. but yes I do agree that there are LOTS of "fart" apps though..

Again, please don't come here and post random thing that's full of hatred just because you've read the title only and that sparked something in you to start saying mindless things without even understanding the point of this thread...

Thanks in advance,

I did not call the iTunes Music Store "garbage" . . . . my point is that with the thousands of Apps in the App Store . . . . most are frivolous apps that you would never use . . . they are only so many things you need on a mobile . . . I read an article that said the average iphone user only used about 5 Apps . . . I would definitely prefer to use a few more but defiantly not a thousand or even a hundred.

People are quit to point out "iPhone has 100,000 Apps" but are you going use 100,000 Apps?

How many of the 100,000 Apps are even worth the download?

Yes, A SOLID MUSIC APP is a must, photo editing and recording, social networking integration apps are always good, a feed reader, a kick *** web browser, some games, phone, email and contact of course, but what else really is their?

Can you name 100 Mobile Apps that you need on your phone?
(or even on your PC for that matter?)

I am sorry if I came off that way . . . that was not my intent . . . I am not mad because you want to run the Apps your used to using.

That is why I ending my rant with a question....If you could name the Apps maby 10-20 that you think are missing from Maemo

That way people in the community and/or developers of the Original Project's themselves can contribute a Maemo App that would fit your needs or even let you know about a program that is available that you might not know about.

Hello all maemo.org users! At last I decided to register here so that I can also comment(been reading these forums quite a while now...about since OS2008 times).

To the topic: After googling some best iphone games and apps I think there is not much applications I'd like to have my soon to be delivered n900(ordered mine from Mindfactory.de and been waiting it 3months now). But still there is some like Monkey Island SE and Rolando. And I think "because we can" has always been good answer in maemo and linux community.

I don't think this would be impossible to do because it doesn't require real emulation but virtual machine due similar main components with 3gs. I remember N800 running android and WinCE in vmware demo some time ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNo6pn-dnSQ)

I'm not expert in this but at least I wouldn't say that it is impossible.

Just out of curiosity I went to appshopper.com and searched for 'fart' to see the exact numbers of apps with that term within the title or description. Result?

590.

Last time Steve Jobs publicly boasted about his ***** length, he claimed there were 140,000 apps in the AppStore library.... which makes the fart apps 0.42% of the total library.

So, I say that for any platform to be taken seriously, they have to keep the # of fart apps well below 0.42% of their total apps.
