From what I have seen and read I am lead to beleive the N900 does not support javascript, is this correct?

Im in the UK and have been trying to connect to a BT Openzone hotspot using WiFi. It fails to load the next page after I select Vodafone from a list of partners. It seems to be calling a javascript probe of the device which fails and then the browser comes back with "MicroB cant establish a connection". Also the same occurs with firefox stating "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at wlan.vodafone.net...etc"

Wondering if any UK users have seen this?

What same error in microB? If it is then looks like BT Openzone is a no go for n900 users... massive let down.

The N900 supports javascript to practically the same level as desktop firefox. What it doesn't support is java. Java and javascript are completely different things, despite the names. I assume that's where the confusion about javascript not being supported comes from. As for your actual problem, I don't have access to openzone myself, though I can use wifi at work with a system where a browser window opens to log in, and remains open to keep the connection alive.

Yea its the same with openzone but it seems the drop down menu for selecting vodafone calls java to find out what device your on which causes the problem.

I find that hard to believe, there are few uses for Java these days. I would expect any device tests to be plain javascript. That said, why would it even need to know what device you are using anyway?

Is this BEFORE you have logged in that it fails? If so I might be able to grab my laptop and have a look at what code is on the page, but I do not have a login to test fully.

same problem here with an O2 sim card. Previously with iPhone and BT Openzone login was automatic. Now with N900, having changed tariff from iPhone to reg "smart phone" tarrif, have to login manually by selecting O2 from partner login dropdown then entering phone number.

Error message is "cannot complete logon call". O2 baffled. Tried all sorts of resets. No joy.

Same prob with The Cloud hotspots. Error message is different though. First it was simple "login error" but now, since MAC address reset by O2, error is "You cannot add another device to your account"

wifi fine at home and elsewhere (including starbucks 'Bell hotspot' in the US which requires a login). it's just the UK "unlimited wifi" hotspots from BT and The Cloud causing the prob.

Just to be clear, I see no evidence of a Java applet on the login pages. It's all javascript in the browser. My laptop gets the same error message from The Cloud using firefox and chrome (which you'd expect cos the laptop isn't auth to use the wifi via O2 login and doesn't have a sim card - but the N900 is and does).

Possibilities:

security feature in Maemo/browser preventing sending of MAC address during login?

MAC address sent but somehow on a list of not-authed devices (ie not a smartphone)?

some other (javascript?) interrogation of device to establish presence of authed sim card is failing?

Anyone solved this and actually logged on to a BT Openzone or The Cloud hotspot in the UK on an N900 with any operator's sim card?

Rich

I use the cloud for wifi and mine works fine? Filled in the form to create an account and it logs me in and away i go in a few seconds, also my ISP is BT and i get free mobile broadband with btopenzone, i can connect and use to hotspots called btfon but i think these are different to the btopenzone hotspots, something to do with bt broadband customers using their wireless routers as mini hotspots

thanks Jezz,

which mobile operator are you with? O2? Voda?

Contract? PAYG?

also, did you sign up to The Cloud from their login page and agree to pay them directly? or are you using inclusive wifi from your mobile provider?

sorry for all the Qs; just trying to get my facts straight before I go back to O2 cust serv.

Hi Rich, i'm on vodafone contract, surely it shouldnt matter about which mobile provider your with as using wifi is nothing to do with them? With the cloud i have only used the free hotspots, i work for Pret A Manger who provide free wifi from the cloud, used to registration page when you connect to the wifi, so no payment details and logs me in automatically, the btfon hotspots i've used work fine with a bt login, but as i said before these might be different to the btopenzone hotspots
