Excuse me for maybe stupid question.

I installed navit from app manager, but I suppose doesn`t has a map for my country. So I downloaded it from the link in one of previous posts.
The file I downloaded is .bin.
I do not saw folder navit in my N900, so I made one and copied the .bin file inside.
But still navit does not show a map.

Please tell me - what I should make to have working navit?

Thanks in advance.

Navit is still early in beta stages right now. It doesn't "just work", it needs a lot of tweak that I don't know any of but you may find answer by going through this thread.

@azz,
Thanks for reply.

Believe me - I red all 19 pages as carefully as I can, but I am not a Linux guy and can not understand everything.
So, waiting for stable and useful version of it with good explanations how to do and use navit.....

I agree. It is pretty confusing...I believe most of the guys here compile their own source instead of getting it from app manager. There are too many bugs and without the proper knowledge, it's impossible to try to fix them... Let's hope sygic and nokia get something going soon....I am sure Navit will eventually progress enough to be usable for normal users but that won't be anytime too soon....

When I tried this :

Code:
svn co https://navit.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/navit/trunk/navit

cd navit

export SBOX_DEFAULT_AUTOMAKE=1.10
./autogen.sh
I get the error ./autogen.sh: line 15: libtool:not found

Where can I get libtool?

From Helsinki to Rauma the result is the same.
This is not good, because I don't know my starting point (streets of Helsinki) well so I would like to have some guidance. Again after about 70 km navit comes to life.

First I thought that there is something wrong in map data around Mynämäki (about 70km from Rauma), but it doesn't explain why the route back to Rauma works through that point nicely.

Does anyone have any idea why this happens.

Another quite odd feature is that gui is different with and without gainroot. Without gainroot (from desktop or terminal) menus on top of screen are bigger than with gainroot from terminal. Why is that?

In my opinion hardware is great and navit is a great piece of software!
What I found when testing Navit on my N800 last year was that the openstreet maps for my area (Ohio, USA) were in pretty bad shape. In one case, I believe one side of the 2 lane road was correct, the other side had breaks in it. In short, it would route properly in one direction, but not the other. To find the breaks, I had to go look at the maps on openstreetmap.org at close to the highest zoom along the route.

In another case, one road showed multiple roads overlaying. Depending on which "road" I was on, it would route properly, but not from one of the other "roads" as they were incomplete lengths. Again, this was difficult to find.

As I don't really have much free time to go through and help correct roads in my area, I gave up using Navit. It was fine to see where I was, but routing was poor due mostly to poor maps.

I have similar problems in Finland maps. Driving from Kokkola to Vaasa 123km. Navit didnt found route first pos blocked. When i was drove about 60km it finally found route. Then Navit says that next turn was after 10km, but i knew i have to drive same road almoast 50km more. At Navit when look at map at the same spot where it claims that i have o make turn it seem that the half of the road was gone, but when looking the same map on the internet where i took the maps the road was okay.

I have tried to take map from Planet extract and Cloudmate and the problems exist on both maps after adding them to Navit, so it seems that the problems is in Navit

Hi all,

for sure OSM maps aren't complete. However, feel free to fix errors - finally it is an open approach. And free.

Also, Navit isn't at all that bad. With some knowledge and reading this forum you should be able to get it working. Even without deeper Linux knowledge.

However, I would appreciate if those who re-compile navit could contribute to navit package and make it "easy-to-install" ... it seems to be not that hard.
