If you are willing to experiment a bit there are a lot of decent apps in testing and dev

http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/27/m...-applications/

My impression of android vs maemo is (our household has both):
Android apps are not that great compared with iphone

Android:
skype sucks
Basically work with telcos to block voip
pdf reader (brightreader etc) sucks
Browser is very good - more responsive than microb
(but that probably is a webkit vs gecko thing)
maps are better if you have a data plan
media playing isn't great (no avi)

My only issues with nokia are:
1) Ovi maps
2) Screen size and batt life (I liked the larger screen and larger batt)
3) Development transition - they are moving platforms too fast to give people time to port their apps (Maemo 4->5->6. they should make it easier and give booties
4) User interface has a learning curve (actually 4 was easier as it is more like a desktop os)
5) software glitches - which they are working on

wait a weekend, see what MWC has to offer, if you don't see anything you must have, then get the n900
nothing worse than ordering the phone now then a drop-dead phone is announced monday

Since you're asking, contemplating one or the other, I'd say wait. Maemo 6 has been announced, it's coming this year; so wait.

IMHO, you can ask a lot of people whether you should buy or not a device, but the truth is that only you can get the right answer.

I decided not to wait until Maemo 6, so i would say "don't wait". But some others have waited because they have their own opinion.

As some people spotted, ¿which are your preferences?

I guess that you can ask very specific questions, so you can finally decide whether to wait or not. But sadly, generic questions like "should i wait" or "will next device be better" won't give you enough information to clear your doubts.

(have in mind that when next device is released, a new one will begin its development, and that one will have probably better specs, so the cicle will begin again).

I would wait for Maemo 7 if I were you, then again Maemo 8 will be just around the corner so why not wait a bit longer for that. Then again Maemo 9.................

Maemo 7 isn't slated for 2010. Maemo 6 is. That's a big difference.

I suspect that was sarcasm...

I'd agree with the above.

I thinked about this deeply last night and I found one point.

Both iphone and Android phone can upgrade their OS.

But N900 cannot. Also, all NOKIA phones cannot upgrade OS.

It's just like on my PC, I can use Ubuntu 8.04.3.
I can also install 8.10 or 9.04 or 9.10.
When 10.04 release on Apr.2010, of course, I can install it on my PC.

But it seems that NOKIA's "rule" is to make the mobile phone and OS a bundle. For instance, you cannot install Maemo 5 on N810.
and it seems Maemo 6 cannot run properly on N900.

I think this "NOKIA rule" may be OK with some S40 low-end (entry level) mobile phones. But for smart phone market, it should not be taken.

So I am wondering whether NOKIA could provide a CD image
or some thing like that to let the end user install the OS by ourselves,
just like what Apple does.

Who says N900 cannot upgrade, that has not been announced? However as maemo has multi touch, alegedly, that may scupper the n900.

Me, I am enjoying the n900 too much. Given the delays with evrything nokia is doing i can't see a Maemo 6 device appearing till the very end of 2010 if at all. By that time I will be close to my contract end anyway
