Hi.
It has been several weeks now and no response from Nokia about my question of why I can't download (or update) from my N900 (failed catalogues) or using the software uploader on the PC (says no updates available). I thought maybe the service was downed for some reason.
I now have another problem that has just appeared so I can't even use the uploader ie I have lost USB connectivity to the PC. Can no longer see the N900 on the PC when I put it into Mas Storage mode.
Any help will be really appreciated as what was a really good experience to start with is becoming very frustrating.

What errors do you get from the failed catalogues?

hi.
under 'failed catalogues' in the application manager i check details for nokia applications. info as follows.
- web address is https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/fremantle/ssu/apps/
- distribution is ./
- components is blank
- message is 'https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/freemantle/ssu/apps/./Packages Could not resolve host: downloads.maemo.nokia.com (Domain name not found)'

If I try to access the web address from the PC I get thsi message:
You don't have permission to access "http://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/" on this server.

The PC error message is normal, so you can ignore that. The repository problem indicates issues with DNS resolution, You could try specifying the DNS servers explicitly - have a look at this thread for info on where to change it, and the Google DNS servers to try.

Hi. I have followed the thread and tried all the suggestions and still not joy.
- Tried changing to google's dns servers on both the n900 and router
- changed the /etc/hosts file to the addresses shown by nslookup
- changed the first line in the /etc/hosts file from 127.0.0.1 Nokia-N900-42-11 localhost to 127.0.0.1 Nokia-N900-51-1 localhost

Is the problem with my ISP here in Switzerland? But they sell N900's here in Switzerland.

This is very odd.
After posting my last message, I got the "!" to say there were updates to download. don't know if these updates were just made available, but maybe there needs to be something there else you get catalogue failures?

Despite switching the DNS servers my device uses to the Google ones (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), when on my home wifi, I've continued to get intermittent issues with DNS lookups for the Nokia repos.

If I switch to a 3G connection, I have no issues. There's obviously something strange with name resolution on the device or in the repo service.

Today, I just modified the wifi settings so that one of the DNS servers, the first one, was Google's 8.8.8.8 and the 2nd, was a NAS box on my LAN running dnsmasq. Now HAM can access the Nokia repos again, over my wifi. Historically, I've usually used the box running dnsmasq and my LAN's router adress or one of the ISP's DNS server's addresses as my two nominated DNS servers, but these configurations have always manifested the failure to resolve Nokias repos, occassionally.

I don't understand the cause cause of the problem, but I do advise having some diversity in your choice of DNS servers, if you are having similar problems. Don't pick two from your ISP (including local machines that feed from them, like the one here running dnsmasq), and don't pick two from Google (or anywhere else).

Hopefully this will minimise the chances of having name resolution failures.
