so this microusb problem is caused by physical contact of the device and a hard surface?

Strength measurements of soldered joints in electronics are widely used for the assessment of joint quality. However, a variety of experiments, reported in this article, clearly show that a strong relationship between initial strength and joint quality does not exist. Far more important for joint reliability is the resistance of soldered constructions to low-cycle fatigue of the solder metal, caused by thermal expansion differences upon temperature cycling during use. A temperature cycling test is proposed as a standard accelerated ageing method for the prediction of the low-cycle fatigue life of soldered joints in electronics.

greetings,
i've been following this thread and this issue close since i noticed it last week. I hope that someone important from nokia is reading this and will take note of the following.
I live in canada and had been hoping to get a n900 now that we have a suitable carrier (wind mobile). Now, with this uncertainty regarding the quality of the n900 and nokia's, so far, lack-luster support i've decided to not purchase an n900 and look elsewhere for my mobile needs. Further, as an it consultant i'll have to recommend that my customers do the same.

I'm wondering if heat also has something to do with it. For instance, in the cases where the connector simply came out with the charger cord; how long was the device on charge?
In any event, simply relying on the tensile strength of surface mount soldered points may no longer be considered "good" engineering.

That is... Not because of the relatively low melting point of silver solder rather, the normal expansion and contraction of the board it is attached to will compromise the adhesion of the soldered "pads".
So basically Nokia may be full of fish crap and their insistence on the "pad" being the indicator of abuse could end up being their downfall if an expert is ever actually consulted.
